5 Turn on Windows Defender with the following steps a Click Start | All Programs and then select Windows Defender b On the Windows Defender dialog box, review the information and click the link to Turn On and Open Windows Defender If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue c Click Tools and select Options Scroll to the bottom of the Options page and notice that the selection to Use Windows Defender is selected d Scroll to the bottom of the Options page and select Administrator Options Uncheck the Use Windows Defender check box and click Save If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue 6 Return to the Security Center window Notice that when Windows Defender is turned back on, the Malware protection item is green again Close this window by clicking the X at the top right of the window 7 Back in Windows Defender, click the Home link Notice at the bottom of the page, Status information is listed You can tell when the last scan was performed, the scan schedule, whether or not real-time protection is enabled, and which definition version you have 8 To initiate a scan immediately, click the Scan link at the top of the Windows Defender window This will initiate a scan of your computer for spyware TIP Depending on the resources (such as memory and processing power) you have available for your system, this may significantly impact performance It is best to schedule the scans to occur at a time when you re not using the computer 9 Click Stop Scan to stop the scan This will allow you to move on to the next step in the exercise When you re done with the exercise, feel free to begin another manual scan and let it run to completion 10 Click the Tools link to access the Tools and Settings page 11 Click the Quarantined Items This will show the items that have been quarantined by Windows Defender It s possible this list is blank Notice the three buttons available at the bottom of the page If you want to allow a quarantined item to run, you can select it and click Restore If you click Remove, the program will be deleted from your computer 12 Click Tools and click Allowed Items This list shows the items that have been allowed by your overriding Windows Defender alerts You can remove an item from the list so that Windows Defender will again alert on it if it runs 13 Click Tools and then click Software Explorer Select the Startup Programs category This lists all the programs that are configured to start automatically when the computer starts Notice that some programs can be modified by selecting the program and clicking Disable, but other programs are required by Windows and the Disable button is dimmed and not selectable
