Sharing Media on a Network
When you enable media sharing, people and devices on the network can share music, pictures, and videos with each other This makes a lot of sense for a home network You enable media sharing in the Network and Sharing Center The Network and Sharing Center was covered in much more depth in 5 However, the last option (Media Sharing) was barely mentioned Figure 15-10 shows the Network and Sharing Center and the resulting screen when you try to change media sharing from Off to On
Figure 15-10 Enabling media sharing
As a reminder, you can access the Network and Sharing Center by clicking Start, rightclicking Network, and selecting Properties If Media Sharing is turned off, you can click Change to turn it on; however, media sharing can be enabled only if your computer is connected to a private network Select the check box to share your media and click OK Next, the Media Sharing dialog box will appear and you have the choice of allowing or denying access to your media to other users on the same PC Figure 15-11 shows that Other Users of This PC have been allowed access (note the check in the icon) If you click Settings, you can further specify the files types you want to share and restrict shared files based on ratings Additionally, you can check the box to allow new devices and computers to automatically be able to share media (though this setting is not recommended)
