One of the great things about mobile computers is that you re able to use them even when they re not plugged in However, there is a limit to how long they can operate on battery power If you used a 50-pound battery, your computer would probably last quite a while, though your arms might get tired lugging it around The balance that laptop manufacturers seek is having a battery powerful enough to power your computer for a long time, but that is light enough that it doesn t require a crane to move around There is a constant effort to increase the power of a battery while decreasing its weight You also have the ability to modify the power consumption of your mobile computer with a few settings You can use the Power Options applet in the Control Panel to select and modify power plans You can access this applet by launching the Control Panel, selecting Mobile PC, and clicking Power Options Figure 16-1 shows the Power Options applet It includes three power plans For any of these power plans, the system can automatically sense when it is using battery power and when it is plugged in

Turning off the display is simple enough to understand; the display can be turned off via a software signal However, you can also use the sleep, hibernate, and hybrid power saving modes The high-level explanations of these modes are
Sleep
Puts the computer into a low power state Can wake up rather quickly
Hibernate Saves the entire computer environment to hard disk and completely powers down Takes time to restart, but it is quicker than a cold start and the original environment is completely restored Hybrid sleep Saves the computer environment to hard disk and puts the computer into a low power state (does not shut down completely) Consumes less power than sleep mode, but is restored more quickly than hibernate EXAM TIP If you want your systems to be completely powered off when not being used, configure them to hibernate after an idle period
