If you ve worked with the Device Manager in previous editions of Windows (such as Windows XP), you ll be happy to know that much of the functionality is the same
Starting the Device Manager
The Device Manager requires administrative permissions to make any changes If you are logged in as an administrator, then the User Account Control dialog will appear prompting you to continue If you are logged in with a standard user account, you will access Device Manager in Read-only mode You can access the Device Manager in a few different ways
Click Start and then click Control Panel Click System and Maintenance Click System In the Tasks pane on the left, click Device Manager Click Start, right-click Computer, and select Properties This is the same System window that you can access from the Control Panel In the Tasks pane on the left, click Device Manager Click Start, right-click Computer, and select Manage If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue In the left pane under System Tools, click Device Manager Click Start In the Start Search box, enter mmc devmgmtmsc
Enabling and Disabling Devices
Once launched, the Device Manager looks similar to Figure 3-1 One of the great things about the Device Manager is that when things are wrong, they jump out at you For example, in Figure 3-1, the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers node is opened and the Realtek High Definition Audio device has a down arrow icon This indicates the device is disabled Any device can be enabled or disabled within the Device Manager, by simply rightclicking the device and selecting Enable (when it is disabled) or Disable (when it is enabled) Additionally, you may see a device with a black question mark or a black exclamation mark in a yellow circle These icons often indicate a problem with the driver EXAM TIP If a device has a down arrow on the icon, it is disabled Before you can use the device, you must enable it If the device has a yellow circle with a black question mark or black exclamation mark, there is likely a problem with the driver

Working with Drivers
Drivers are the files that an operating system uses to communicate with devices Without the proper driver, even the best hardware is nothing more than a useless mass of silicon Thankfully, Plug and Play technology automatically installs and configures drivers for many pieces of hardware you may install When Plug and Play doesn t work is when you need to get involved
