13 On the Welcome to the Extend Volume Wizard screen, click Next 14 On the Select Disks screen, ensure the 100MB partition you just created is selected Enter 100 in the Select The Amount of Space in MB text box This will change the Total Volume Size In Megabytes (MB) to 200MB Your display will look similar to Figure 4-13

15 On the Completed the Extend Volume Wizard screen, click Finish Your new volume will now be 200MB in size TIP If desired, you can right-click the created volume and select Delete Volume This will return the created volume to the unallocated disk space You can then select the original partition and select Extend Volume, and select the defaults to extend your volume to the full size, including all of the unallocated space
Basic and Dynamic
Windows Vista supports two types of disk configurations: basic and dynamic When you first install Windows Vista, you will have a basic disk Later, you can convert your disk to dynamic
Basic Basic disks use partitions and are limited to only four partitions as described earlier These are the traditional disk types used with most Microsoft operating systems Dynamic Dynamic disks use volumes instead of partitions, and there is no limit to the number of volumes per disk Additionally, dynamic volumes can contain data from multiple physical disks

CAUTION You should not use dynamic disks on systems that have more than one operating system (multiboot systems) Moreover, unless you specifically have a reason to upgrade a disk to dynamic, you should avoid doing so Dynamic disks don t have wide support with third-party tools and aren t even compatible between two operating systems running on the same system Further, you should consider the conversion a risky operationYou should back up all your data before the conversion The two primary reasons you may want to convert your disk to dynamic are to create a striped volume or to create a spanned volume Both will be explained in the next sections If you don t need to support these specific benefits, you re better off not converting your disks to dynamic Dynamic disks are only supported on the following editions of Windows Vista:
