One of the most common commands you ll use from the command line when troubleshooting networking issues is the IPConfig command IPConfig can be entered alone, or with one of several switches TIP Most command-line commands are not case sensitive In other words, you can enter the commands in all uppercase, all lowercase, or in any mixture of case you like The command will work the same Commands are frequently listed with some letters capitalized, but this is for readability only As you try the commands in this section, use all uppercase, all lowercase, or a combination of upperand lowercase letters to prove this yourself When entered alone, IPConfig shows the following information for available NICs:

/All The All switch shows a significant amount of information on each of the connections It includes the basics (such as IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway) but also shows a lot more For example, it shows the hostname of the computer, and individual settings for each NIC Figure 5-12 shows the printout for the /all switch for a single NIC (only the part of the printout for this NIC is shown) Note that DHCP Enabled is Yes, Autoconfiguration Enabled (APIPA) is Yes, and the Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address is in the 169254yz range This indicates that DHCP was unreachable
Figure 5-12 Partial IPConfig /All results
If the system was manually configured, the DHCP Enabled setting would indicate No
/Release If a DHCP address is automatically assigned, this command will release it The resulting IP address is 0000 This command is often used with the IPConfig /renew command to get a new IP address from the DHCP Server; the /release command is issued first If the IP address is manually configured, this command won t do anything /Renew This will cause the client to send a DHCP discover message looking for a DHCP server to get a lease If a DHCP server is available and reachable, the

client will get an IP address If a response isn t received from the DHCP server, the client will assign an APIPA address (169254yz) This command is often used with the IPConfig /release command to get a new IP address from the DHCP Server; the /renew command is issued after the /release command If the IP address is manually configured, this command won t do anything
/RegisterDNS This forces the client to register its name and IP address with the DNS server It creates an A record (also known as a host record) on DNS so that other hosts can locate the client through DNS name resolution queries /DisplayDNS Every time a client does a DNS name resolution query, the result is stored in cache for a time determined by the DNS server This command will show all the entries stored in cache It also shows entries stored in the hosts file The hosts file will be described in the Name Resolution section /FlushDNS If you want to remove items from the DNS cache, you can use the /flushDNS switch It will remove all items except those in the hosts file This switch can be useful if servers have new IP addresses assigned but clients still have the old IP address in cache For example, a client may connect to a server named MCITP1 In the process, MCITP1 was resolved by DNS to a specific IP address The next time the client wants to connect to MCITP1, it doesn t need to query DNS again, since the address is already in the host cache This works fine unless MCITP1 is reconfigured with a new IP address If MCITP1 has a new address, but the old address is still in cache, the client won t be able to connect until the MCITP1 entry is removed from cache The entry is removed when the Time To Live property expires for the entry (which can be minutes or hours), or by using the /flushDNS switch
