Exam Tip
In the next section, you ll also see these two exams listed as electives These exams can count once each as either a core design exam or as an elective choice
APPENDIX B Career Flight Path
Elective Exam
With the core client operating system and design exams, you are given a bit of choice; but with the last elective exam, you can really customize your MCSE around your interests and knowledge Microsoft currently offers eight exams to choose from:
70-086 Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Systems Management Server 20 70-227 Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, Enterprise Edition 70-228 Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Enterprise Edition 70-229 Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Enterprise Edition 70-232 Implementing and Maintaining Highly Available Web Solutions with Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Technologies and Microsoft Application Center 2000 70-297 Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and Network Infrastructure 70-298 Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network 70-299 Implementing and Administering Security in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
Upgrade Paths
Microsoft offers upgrade paths for those holding MCSE credentials on either NT 40 or Windows 2000 These paths allow the MCSE to credit previous exams toward the requirements for the Server 2003 credential
NT 40 Upgrade Options
If you are an MCSE holding an NT 40 credential, you are given credit for the elective exam requirement by simply having the MCSE credential on NT 40 However, to upgrade to a Windows Server 2003 level, you still must complete the following:
All four of the networking systems exams (70-290, 70-291, 70-293, and 70-294)
MCSE Planning a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
For the client requirement, either the 70-210 or the 70-270 exam If you ve already passed either of these exams as part of your previous certification path, then you will receive credit for this requirement For the design requirement, either a Windows 2000 design exam or a Windows Server 2003 design exam
Windows 2000 Upgrade Paths
If you currently hold a Windows 2000 MCSE certification, you have the option of taking either of two networking systems exams:
70-292 Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSA Certified on Windows 2000 70-296 Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSE Certified on Windows 2000
or the full four networking system exams listed previously (70-290, 70-291, 70-293, and 70-294) For the client exam requirement, you re already in good stead because your Windows 2000 credential required that you pass either 70-210 or 70-270 The same goes for the design requirement The design exam you passed to obtain your Windows 2000 credential now counts toward your Windows Server 2003 credential And finally, that Windows 2000 MCSE will count as fulfillment of your elective exam requirement as well!
