The resources on your network are basically anything that provides services or functionality A server is an example of a resource, as is a printer, router, or network printing device Putting these in the right place will affect the performance of your network, as well as who can access them and how they will be used

There are a number of server solutions and situations that affect where you place a server within your network Although there are no hard and fast rules, servers can be divided into the following groups and therefore locations:

Low-end servers These are designed to handle between 1 and 100 clients in a small office/home office environment They are usually general-purpose workhorses that can provide file serving, printer spooling, and e-mail/Internet connectivity solutions all in the same box or can handle specific tasks within a larger department or business environment

Mid-range servers These are designed to provide the localized requirements for a single department within a larger, multidepartment company Supporting between 1 and 400 users, they can be tailored for specific server needs, such as a file server or, depending on the exact number of users that need to be supported, they can be a generalpurpose box In small- to medium-sized enterprises, this could be a central server providing all the services for a company, but most companies at this level would have two servers for redundancy High-end servers These are designed with major, single-use tasks in mind, such as supporting Microsoft Exchange Server or SQL Server in a dedicated capacity They usually form part of a larger suite of servers to support the company s computing requirements
Most servers fall within one of these areas However, the exact layout will depend entirely on your network and company requirements Some will use a big central file server for all users, others will use departmental servers, and others will use a mixture of the two Also keep in mind that segmentation of a network allows you to improve and build on your network configuration without affecting the other areas of your network too much For example, if you look at a typical small office network, as shown in Figure 46, you can see that two servers provide file sharing, printer sharing, and other services to their clients using a switched hub to connect the machines together A switched hub alleviates the background noise that would otherwise affect a shared hub based network

CHAPTER 4 Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Network Infrastructure
In a medium-sized network, the problem is the sheer number of clients on the network and the traffic they generate Figure 47 shows a sample layout with two separate client networks, both using switches, and a separate server network, also using a switch Between these, providing a core network backbone for internetwork traffic to flow over is a layer 3 switch A backbone handles core traffic between core network centers to flow over a fast connection A layer 3 switch ensures that the networks will be kept logically separate while still allowing the core traffic to flow For speed reasons, the backbone switch could be operating 1000Mbps with uplinks to the client switches at the same speed, while the clients could be operating at either 10 or 100Mbps
