When someone has a problem (of almost any sort, it seems), the common advice we give them is, You need therapy! Therapy, or the process of (-y) treating (therap), probably began very early in human history There is evidence from cave paintings and other relics that lesions or wounds occurred quite frequently among groups of hunters

Terms of Therapy
thousands of years ago A spear could accidentally puncture the skin on a hunter s foot, for example, thereby creating a physical trauma (TRAW-muh) (in this case, a skin puncture) (The word trauma, like lesion, means wound, but it is usually restricted to physical injuries or those involving the mind Injuries involving say, a spot of cancer, in contrast, are usually called lesions) In this modern era, an entire discipline of medicine called traumatology (traw-mu-TAHL-uh-jee) has been developed This discipline involves the study of (-ology) physical wounds (traumat), such as those that may be caused by automobile or rearm accidents Closely related to traumatology is pathology (path-AHL-uh-jee) This is literally the study of (-ology) disease and suffering (path) A term for a condition of (-ity) illness (morbid) in general is morbidity (mor-BID-ihtee) A person can have morbidity (illness), such as the common cold, but still not necessarily have visible body lesions If morbidity becomes serious enough, then mortality (mor-TAL-ih-tee) a condition of (-ity) death (mortal) may result A pathologist (path-AHL-uhjist) may be called in to conduct a postmortem (post-MORT-em) The pathologist is one who studies (-ologist) disease (path) occurrence within the body tissues He or she searches for evidence of the cause of mortality during the postmortem The word postmortem literally means an examination of the body that takes place after (post-) death (mortem) [Study suggestion: A synonym for a particular word is another word that has a similar or identical meaning Try to recall a synonym for postmortem that was on the word list in 2 Hint - - the word begins with the letter a]
