we Rather, we tend to imagine pills or capsules These are the forms that most highly-puri ed modern drugs assume Take common aspirin, for example For many centuries, native people knew that chemicals could be extracted from willow bark and used as effective analgesics (see 2) for headaches and other painful problems But it wasn t until 1852 that the important analgesic chemical found in willow bark, aspirin, was nally made in a lab Another name for pure aspirin is acetylsalicylic (uh-SEE-til-SAL-ih-SIL-ik) acid A French chemist, named Ernest Fourneau (foor-NO), who lived from 1872 to 1949, synthesized many other valuable drugs in their pure chemical forms This included the forerunners to the modern sulfa (SUL-fah) drugs and the antihistamines (an-tih-HISS-tah-meenz) Such drugs act against (anti-) the natural substance called histamine (HISS-tah-meen) Now, histamine is released from injured cells during tissue in ammation (in- ah-MAY-shun) a condition of (-tion) a ame within (in amm) An in ammation of the skin, for example, such as sunburn or a mosquito bite, is accompanied by the four symptoms (SIMP-tums) of heat, redness, swelling, and pain [Thinking probe: After which of these four symptoms do you think the word in ammation is named Why ] Antihistamines, consequently, are drugs that operate to reduce the swelling and other symptoms caused by histamine release from in amed tissues Ernest Fourneau s work in this area was considered so important, in fact, that he has often been called the Father of Chemotherapy We have already mentioned that pharmacology involves the formal study of (-ology) drugs (pharmac) And a pharmacologist is one who studies these drugs and their various body actions A pharmacist (FAR-muh-sist), in marked contrast, is one who specializes in (-ist) the preparation and dispensing of drugs [Thinking probe: Whom (a pharmacologist, or a pharmacist) would you expect to see behind the counter in your local drugstore Whom would you expect to see working in a medical research lab Why ]

Having covered the key history of chemotherapy and pharmacology, let us now consider the twelve major types of drugs used for therapy Many of the drug category names are based upon the kinds of effects they have upon the human body [Study suggestion: As you read about each drug category, look over Figure 44 and enjoy the intuitive meanings of the little icons (picturesymbols) that represent each category] 1 Anti-in ammatory (an-tih-in-FLAM-ah-toh-re) drugs literally act against (anti-) the symptoms of tissue in ammation One well-known speci c type of anti-in ammatory drug, of course, is aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)

2 Antihistamines we have previously mentioned as acting to counteract the tissue swelling caused by histamine after a tissue is injured These antihistamines are often packaged in over-the-counter remedies that reduce swelling of the nasal (NAY-sal, nose ) passages during a common cold They also help the nose stop dripping! 3 Antipyretic (an-tih-pie-RET-ik) drugs reduce or work against (anti-) the effects of a fever (pyret) Acetylsalicylic acid (the main ingredient in aspirin tablets) is a most-common antipyretic agent 4 Analgesics (see 2) take away (an-) the sense of pain (alges) 5 Anesthetics (see 2) take away (an-) all body feelings (esthet) 6 Narcotics (see 2) create a powerful benumbing (narc) effect, as produced, for example, by injections of cocaine 7 Sedatives (SED-ah-tivs) pertain to (-ive) quieting down (sedat) a patient, usually as a preop procedure carried out before surgery ( 2) They usually act to decrease the level of a person s consciousness (KAHN-shus-ness) or awareness, as well as reduce shaking 8 Stimulants (STIM-you-lunts) goad or excite (stimul) the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or some other body system, causing an increase in their functions Caffeine (kaf-EEN), for example, is the main stimulant chemical found in coffee, tea, and colas 9 Depressants (de-PRESS-unts) literally press down decrease the functions of particular parts of the body They include central nervous system depressants, cardiac (KAR-dee-ak, referring to heart ) depressants, and respiratory (RES-pir-ah-tor-ee) depressants, which inhibit us from breathing again (respirat) 10 Tranquilizers (TRAN-kwuh-lie-zers) calm anxious or agitated people, usually without decreasing their level of consciousness (awareness) 11 Antibiotics (an-tih-buy-AHT-iks) are chemicals extracted from mold or bacteria that function against or inhibit the living (bi) pathogenic microbes that cause infections Good examples of antibiotic drugs are the penicillins (pen-ih-SILL-ins) They are extracted from the fungus, Penicillium (pen-ih-SILL-e-um), or are produced in the lab by pharmacologists 12 Antitoxins (an-tih-TAHK-sins), as their name suggests, work against the body effects of toxins (TAHK-sins) or poisons Snake venom antitoxins, for instance, are drugs that counteract the sometimes deadly poisonous effects of various snake venoms
