As we have seen, two major processes antigen-antibody reactions and phagocytosis make up our body s immune response When they are both highly successful, we achieve a state of clinical health By clinical health, we mean a lack of morbidity (illness), so that no visit to a medical clinic to receive treatment is necessary:

THE WORLD OF DIAGNOSIS: TAKING STOCK WHEN IMMUNITY FAILS
In reality, of course, the immune response isn t always perfect, so that humans sicken and die There is a whole World of Clinical Diagnosis, therefore, that has been developed over the centuries to describe this morbid reality The word, diagnosis (die-uh-NOH-sis), literally means a condition of (-is) knowledge (gnos) through (dia-) Although its literal meaning is rather clumsy, diagnosis does represent the physician s knowledge about what a person has wrong with them at the present time In other words, it is knowledge about what the person is now going through Say, for instance, that your family caregiver makes a diagnosis of acute coryza (kor-EE-zah) The word, acute, can be subdivided with a single slash mark as acut/e The root, acut, means sudden [Thinking probe: What is the suf x in acute What does it mean in Common English Hint: The suf x is the same as that in macrophage Check your thinking with the next sentence] In plain layman s language, acute means the presence of (-e) something sudden (acut) An acute problem, therefore, is one that has a sudden onset and usually lasts for only a relatively short time The other word in the preceding diagnosis, coryza, derives from the Greek for runny nose An alternative term with almost the same meaning is rhinitis (rye-NEYE-tis) an in ammation of (-itis) the lining of the nose (rhin) Hence, a person who is diagnosed (die-ahg-NOHSD) with acute coryza or rhinitis is suffering, essentially, from the effects of a sudden head cold There are several characteristic symptoms or happenings that are detected by the patient Certainly, the coryza (runny nose) associated with a head cold would be a symptom perceived by the patient Quite frequently, in fact, it is one or more symptoms that bother the patient enough to seek medical help in the rst place! Another self-observed symptom of a cold is an edema or swelling of the membranes lining the nasal (NAY-sal) passages The word, nasal, literally pertains to (-al) the nose (nas) It is an edema (swelling) that causes nasal congestion (kahn-JES-shun) This is a process of (-ion) one s nasal passages becoming stuffed up (congest) Along with such clinical symptoms reported by the patient, however, the examining caregiver will also base his or her diagnostic (die-ug-NAHS-tik) ndings upon a certain number of clinical signs In general, a sign is a mark of some illness or disease that is detected by a doctor or other examiner not by the patient If an assisting nurse places an oral thermometer into a patient s mouth (or), for example, she may report the clinical sign of an oral temperature of 101 degrees F(Fahrenheit) You are somewhat febrile, the nurse informs you What does that mean you (the patient) nervously ask Oh, it just means that you have (-ile) a moderate fever (febr), she casually replies Gosh,
