depended upon what local part of Mr J s brain was actually being deprived of oxygen A computed axial tomography scan (or CAT scan; 5) was done It showed that Broca s (BROH-kahs) area, also called the motor speech area, was severely affected This cerebral region was named after Pierre Paul Broca (BROH-kah), a French surgeon who lived from 1824 to 1880 Dr Broca was

the rst to localize the motor speech area: it is near the base of the precentral gyrus, usually in the dominant cerebral hemisphere (Figure 1112) This region is mainly responsible for forming and using words in speaking, reading, and writing Broca s motor speech area also plays an important role in controlling movements of the tongue, lips, and vocal cords Because Mr J was right-handed, his dominant cerebral hemisphere was the one on the left [Memory probe: Why would a right-handed person have their left cerebral hemisphere as the dominant one What is the anatomical explanation that we made earlier in this chapter ] Therefore, Mr J s Broca s area was located around the base of his left precentral gyrus It was quickly obvious that Broca s area had been damaged by the CVA because of the sudden occurrence of aphasia (uh-FAY-zee-ah) This medical term indicates the condition of (-ia) a lack (a-) of speech (phas) Total aphasia was suffered by Mr J In this condition, the stricken person is able to hear words However, the person just can t process, understand, or express their own words in response! (Talk about complete frustration!)
Probe of case history
(A) Assume that the aphasic (ah-FAY-zik) patient was suffering from a neuroma (nur-OH-muh) that was damaging Broca s area Dissect neuroma by inserting slash marks Label the resulting word parts as pre x, root, or suf x Write the common English translation (B) Plegia (PLEE-jee-uh) means a condition of stroke or paralysis Using the pre x in hemisphere, build a single term that means a condition of paralysis of half (the body) [Check your short answers with the key near the end of this chapter]
