The reason is that carbonic acid is a weak acid and thus donates very few H+ ions The strong HCl from the stomach is transformed into weak H2 CO3 within the intestine This process helps protect the mucosa (inner membrane lining) of the small intestine from the dangerously corrosive (kuh-ROH-siv) or gnawing away effects of too many H+ ions The result of this entire process is a rough acid-base balance within the duodenum and the rest of the small intestine (Figure 127)
