Terms Related to Pregnancy and Urogenital Disorders
In this, our nal chapter, we shall seek to end this book much as we began our life; that is, with the genitourinary (JEN-ih-toh-yur-ih-nair-ee) or urogenital (you-roh-JEN-ih-tal) system And in nishing with this system, we will also discuss a few terms relating to pregnancy and birth
Background and History
If we analyze these two alternate organ system names by inserting slash marks, we get the following results:

OUR URINARY SYSTEM: THE CRITICAL KIDNEY CONNECTION
The rst part of the above translation has to do with the urinary (YUR-ih-nairee) system, which just pertains to (-ary) the urine (urin) Therefore, it is here that we shall begin! We must look to both renal (REE-nal) anatomy and renal physiology, for these give the main story relating to (-al) the structure and function of the kidneys (ren) The kidneys, of course, are the major organs of urine excretion The right and left kidneys are a pair of reddish-brown, bean-shaped organs located quite deep in the back, anking either side of the vertebral column (backbone) Figure 131 provides an overview of gross and microscopic renal anatomy The kidney is surrounded by the renal capsule, a thin whitish membrane of brous connective tissue For purposes of study, the kidney itself is conveniently subdivided into three major areas or zones The outer zone is the renal cortex [Memory probe: Back in 11, in discussing the nervous system, what speci c organ was mentioned that also had a cortex What does cortex mean in English ] The area present (-a) in the middle (medull) of the kidney (ren) is called the renal medulla (mehDEW-lah) Finally, the deepest zone is named the renal pelvis (PEL-vis) or kidney bowl The renal pelvis is the broad, bowl-like sac (SAK) that receives the urine dripping down from the renal cortex and renal medulla Summarizing:
RENAL RENAL THE THREE + = RENAL + CORTEX MEDULLA PELVIS MAJOR ZONES OF THE KIDNEY (Outer bark ) (Broad middle ) (Inner bowl )
Observe in Figure 131 that the renal medulla (middle zone) contains many renal pyramids Shaped much like the at-topped pyramids of the ancient Aztecs, these renal pyramids have a somewhat striped appearance This striped look is a result of the presence of microscopic collecting ducts The straight collecting ducts are connected to the more kinked and coiled renal tubules

Fig 131 An overview of gross and macroscopic renal anatomy
(TWO-byools) The renal tubules, in turn, are part of the nephrons (NEFrahns) Nephrons are the structural and functional units of urine formation There are millions of nephrons present (-on) within each kidney (nephr) Each nephron begins with a glomerulus (gluh-MAYR-you-lus) or little red ball of yarn (glomerul) In reality, each glomerulus is a ball-shaped collection of minute renal capillaries Most of each nephron (including the glomerulus) lies within the renal cortex However, the lower renal tubules, as well as the collecting ducts, travel through the renal medulla
