ability of the kidney tubules to reabsorb water from the urinary ltrate, thereby leaving it to be excreted as a huge volume of urine A special example of this problem is diabetes insipidus (in-SIP-ih-dus) Diabetes (as in diabetes mellitus) means an excessive passing through (diabet) of urine And insipidus indicates the presence of ( us) something tasteless (insipid) A person with diabetes insipidus, therefore, passes a huge volume of extremely dilute and watery hence tasteless urine The basic problem here is a familiar one hormone hyposecretion which we discussed back in 10 The tubular reabsorption of H2 O from the urinary ltrate is greatly increased by antidiuretic (an-tee-die-yuh-RET-ik) hormone (ADH) This hormone is described as antidiuretic because it acts against (anti-) diuresis (diuret) It enlarges the pores in the walls of the collecting ducts, thereby allowing many more H2 O molecules to be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream This great increase in reabsorption thus helps to prevent the occurrence of diuresis (polyuria) Figure 137 (A) provides a symbolic metaphor of a giant body water faucet to help you understand the basic process of reabsorption With diabetes insipidus, however, a signi cant

[ADH]: as blood [H2 O] falls toward its lower normal limit, the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary gland increase their release of ADH; greatly increased reabsorption of water turns kidney faucet down to excreting urine at a slow drip (B) Low blood [ADH]: diabetes insipidus and an uncontrolled high volume of urine excretion from the wide-open kidney faucet

Urogenital System
THE GENITAL (REPRODUCTIVE) SYSTEM
Now that we have dispensed with the urinary portion of the genitourinary system, it is time for us to concentrate upon its second part: the genit (JEN-it) The genital (JEN-ih-tal) portion literally refers to (-al) begetting or producing (genit) Its alternate name is reproductive (ree-proh-DUCK-tiv), which relates to (-ive) producing (product) again (re-) Putting all of this information together, we can conclude that the genital (reproductive) system is the organ system that begets or produces new human beings, again
Sperm cells and their pathway
So, what s it all about, Al e as the old saying goes It (the genital or reproductive system) is really all about two sex cells getting together during fertilization (fer-tih-lih-ZAY-shun) This is the process of (-tion) getting ready to bear (fertiliz) a new child The male sex cell involved in fertilization is the sperm cell, which is formally called a spermatozoon (sper-mat-uh-ZOHun) The spermatozoa (sper-mat-uh-ZOH-ah) are quite colorfully named the seed (spermat) animals (zoo) A close look at Figure 138 (A) will help explain this unusual identity Indeed, each spermatozoon (sperm cell) does have a head piece with a pointed snout, a neck or midpiece that contains energymaking mitochondria, and a long tail piece The tail piece acts as a whip, thrashing side to side and helping to propel this tiny dark seed animal through the uid semen (SEE-men) that is ejaculated (e-JACK-you-lay-ted) with it
