If someone were to tell you that their server is constantly running at 75 percent utilization, would you consider that a problem Your first reaction might be to say yes However, if you think about it, you really do not know What if the server is old, and running at 75 percent is considered to be within normal operating parameters Now that I ve got you thinking, it becomes more obvious that the true answer to my initial question is that you really cannot know without a baseline A baseline is nothing more than a point of reference for future use You create a baseline by monitoring certain resources on a server and either documenting or saving the results in a log file In baselining your server, you really aren t doing anything differently from normal monitoring; you are just going to use the results for a different purpose I d suggest that you create your baseline by monitoring your servers during normal business hours, over a period of several days to several weeks, to really get an idea of how a particular resource is being used throughout the workday Pay attention to the average value for each counter listed just below the chart you create in System Monitor The minimum and maximum values could represent as little as a single instance throughout your monitoring period (perhaps hours, days, or weeks), while the average value yields a better idea of how the server is running overall

Description This counter shows the number of times per second the server cannot find a page, which is 4 kilobytes (KB) of memory, of information in an application s working set (the application s exclusive area of physical memory) and has to search for that information on the pagefile, which resides on a disk If this value is constantly above 20, this is an indication that your server does not have enough physical RAM to handle the applications loaded on it This counter shows the amount of memory assigned to the paged pool, an area of memory for data that can be written to disk when it is not being used Amounts above 200 MB indicate a problem, except when backups are running This counter shows the amount of memory assigned to the nonpaged pool, an area of memory for data that cannot be written to disk when it is not being used Amounts above 100 MB indicate a problem This counter shows the number of page table entries not in use by the system Less than 300 entries indicates a problem This counter shows the amount of memory currently in use by running processes that cannot be shared with other processes If this number has an increasing trend, you may have a process running with a memory leak A healthy server will have at least 200 MB as the largest block of memory free A lower-sized largest block warrants a closer look at the server s health
