Public folders can be replicated, either on an individual basis or as a batch by replicating an entire tree or a subset of the folders in the tree Schedules can be set and modified as needed; if you need to make folder replication available between organizations, there are ways to accomplish this too When managing public folder replication, you ll first need to select which folders to replicate, assign a schedule for replication, and then set the replication message priority Replication is conducted at the item level, meaning that if there is a change to a public folder item, the entire item is replicated Also, you cannot schedule the replication of an individual item to another folder The most granular level of replication can be set only at the folder level To set a folder to replicate, we once again need to turn to the Exchange Management Shell Replicas of a public folder need to be established using the following command:

TIP Microsoft provides a number of Exchange Management Shell scripts to handle complex tasks One of the tasks you can accomplish is to add a replica to a public folder and all of its subfolders using the script AddReplicaToPFRecursiveps1 You can find these scripts in the Scripts folder under the folder into which you installed Exchange

When planning the replication of public folders, you ll need to consider how often information in the folders will change and how fast those changes need to be made available to everyone in the organization For example, a public folder for company memos that is updated with new memos every two hours throughout the day would need a more aggressive replication schedule than a public folder that hosts the company employee manual, which might be updated once a month or so Time-critical information will need a more frequent replication schedule than other types of information The schedule can be set so that replication occurs during times when WAN bandwidth usage is less Using non-peak hours for replication of less-critical information is smart administration and should be considered if this represents a plausible solution for your environment Replication can be set on a per-folder or per-public folder database basis Schedules set at the folder level override the replication schedule set on the public folder database level To set replication for a single folder, use the -ReplicationSchedule parameter with the Set-PublicFolder command You may want to set replication schedules for all folders in the tree and then set special replication schedules for time-critical folders To ensure that those folders that don t require a special replication schedule are replicated according to the public store s schedule, use the -UseDatabaseReplicationSchedule parameter To set the same replication schedule for all folders in the store, use the public folder database properties (Figure 4-15) If you click the Replication Interval drop-down list, you ll find several prebuilt replication schedules, including: Always Run Never Run Run Every Hour Run Every 2 Hours Run Every 4 Hours Use Custom Schedule
If one of the prebuilt schedules doesn t fit your needs, choose Use Custom Schedule, click the Customize button, and enter the needed schedule in the Schedule box You ll notice that as you make different selections in the Replication Interval drop-down list, the schedule is automatically updated in the Schedule box You can suspend and resume public folder replication using the Suspend-PublicFolderReplication command in the Exchange Management Shell This stops all replication organization-wide The Resume-PublicFolderReplication command will return replication to its normal, functional state
