You ll recall that each mailbox server can host up to 50 storage groups A storage group, in and of itself, is pretty useless unless it is populated with at least one store The storage group provides the transaction logs for the stores, as well as a shell within which the databases can run You can create a new storage group by first navigating to the Mailbox node under Server Configuration in the console tree, shown in Figure 5-1

Choose the server in the results pane, and select New Storage Group in the action pane You should see the New Storage Group page of the New Storage Group Wizard, shown in Figure 5-2 In the Storage Group Name field, type the descriptive name you want for this storage group Use the Browse button to the right of the Log Files Path and System Files Path fields to select a location for these files The location you select must already exist If it does not, use the Create New Folder button inside the Browse dialog box to create the folder in the desired location, and then select the newly created folder Remember that the transaction logs should be placed on a physically separate drive from the stores that will use them Not only does this increase recoverability of data in the event of a disaster, but it can also improve performance if the logs are placed on a physical drive that is doing nothing other than hosting these files A disk (or, preferably, a mirrored pair) dedicated to transaction logging will increase Exchange s performance and response time to the end user

new-StorageGroup -Server:'PW-DC1' -Name:'Second Storage Group' LogFolderPath:'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\ Second Storage Group' -SystemFolderPath:'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\ Exchange Server\Mailbox\Second Storage Group' -HasLocalCopy:$true CopyLogFolderPath:'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\ LocalCopies\Second Storage Group' -CopySystemFolderPath:'C:\Program Files\ Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\LocalCopies\Second Storage Group'
Should you select the Enable Continuous Backup For This Storage Group check box, the fields for specifying the location for the system and log files for Local Continuous Backup become enabled for you to configure (more on Local Continuous Replication in 15) Once you have chosen your file locations, click the New button, and the storage group will be created It is important to note that if, at this point, you were to look inside for your folder and the transaction logs associated with the storage group, you would not find any This is because the folder and transaction logs are actually created when the first store is created within the storage group
Moving File Locations for a Storage Group
Sometimes, after the storage group is created, you ll want to change the location of the files This may occur when a new drive is installed into the server, or if a current drive goes bad and you need to move the files to a reliable, working physical drive You can change the transaction log location and system files for an existing storage group by first selecting the storage group and then selecting Move Storage Group from the action pane The Move Storage Group Path Wizard starts, as shown in Figure 5-3 You can browse to new locations for the transaction logs and system files for both the storage group and the Local Continuous Replication (LCR) database (more on this in 15) Because databases exist within the storage group, the transaction logs are in use So, in order to move the logs, the databases must be dismounted during the log move and then remounted A warning dialog box, shown in Figure 5-4, appears, stating this need Once the log files have been moved, the databases will automatically be remounted In addition, if you have LCR enabled, it will need to be suspended by right-clicking the storage group and selecting Suspend Local Continuous Replication in the action pane
