Once the UM IP gateway is created, you will notice that a default UM hunt group is associated with the UM IP gateway I ll cover hunt groups in the next section Before I do, I want to backtrack just a bit to show you the completion of the dial plan s Properties dialog box, where both the UM Server and UM IP Gateway fields are now populated, shown in Figure 7-12

Creating and Managing UM Hunt Groups
Remember that a hunt group represents the extensions supported by a given PBX So when you create a UM IP gateway and a dial plan is selected, a default UM hunt group is created To properly show you the settings in a UM hunt group, look at the New UM Hunt Group Wizard, shown in Figure 7-13, which is started by selecting the UM IP Gateway link and then New UM Hunt Group in the action pane In the wizard, you must specify an object name and associate a UM dial plan and a pilot identifier A pilot identifier is the phone number (or numbers) associated with the hunt group Multiple values can be separated by commas You ll need to get this from those managing your phone system

Figure 7-12 A fully associated UM dial plan
TIP Since there is no way to manage a UM Hunt Group object from either the Exchange Management Console or the Exchange Management Shell, should you need to modify a value, you will need to instead remove and re-create the UM hunt group
Creating and Managing UM Mailbox Policies
A UM Mailbox policy is created with a single-step wizard that asks you for the name of the object and a dial plan to associate with it Similar to a default UM hunt group being created
Management Shell Corner
You can create a UM hunt group using the new-UMHuntGroup cmdlet, as follows:
New-UMHuntGroup -Name 'Pennywise PBX Hunt Group' -PilotIdentifier 9545550127 -UMDialplan 'Pennywise Company-wide Dial Plan' -UMIPGateway 'Pennywise IP Gateway'

Figure 7-13 Creating a new UM hunt group
when you create a UM IP gateway, when you create the first UM dial plan, Exchange creates a default UM Mailbox policy, found on the UM Mailbox Policies tab in the results pane of the Exchange Management Console By viewing the Properties dialog box of the policy object, as shown in Figure 7-14, you can see the settings that are available for configuration The General tab lists the associated dial plan and allows you to set the maximum amount of time a user s greeting can last, with the maximum being 10 minutes, and whether Exchange should send the user a notification e-mail that a call was received On the Message Text tab, you can specify the text that should be included in several different notification e-mails While no text exists in the fields, Exchange does have default message content for all listed messages If you provide text here, it will replace the default message settings

Figure 7-14 Viewing the General tab of a UM Mailbox policy
On the PIN Policies tab, shown in Figure 7-15, you can modify the PIN settings for users associated with this Mailbox policy While most of these settings are self-explanatory, let me address the last three The Allow Common Patterns In PIN option, when selected, disallows the following PIN patterns: Sequential numbers (eg: 1234 or even 12 ) Repeated Numbers (eg: 1111 or even 11 ) Use of the extension as a PIN suffix (eg using 13544 when your extension is 3544 )
The two fields within the Failed Logons section are easy enough to understand, but I would like to address some specifics on values and the impact of the settings Both address what happens when you continually use an incorrect password With the first setting, where the PIN is reset, you can specify a value of zero to disable the resetting of PINs and the locking out of UM mailboxes You can establish a value of up to 999 attempts (although this is not recommended, as it gives way to malicious attempts to access your UM mailbox) The second setting, where the UM mailbox is disabled, must be a value
