Storage quotas are an important tool for managing mailbox and mailbox store sizes These prevent runaway growth of both mailboxes and mailbox stores, and they also prevent situations where mailboxes are attacked by a deluge of messages, perhaps of a large size, which can make the mailboxes (and thus the mailbox store) grow quickly to very large sizes If left uncontrolled, a mailbox store can quickly grow to consume a large amount of free disk space, potentially resulting in a situation where the disk volume runs out of free space When this happens, the mailbox store is dismounted Whether intentional or not (or resulting from a virus or worm outbreak), this can effectively result in a denial of service, and therefore should be considered a security issue Mailboxes on a mailbox store inherit the mailbox quota limits configured on the store Ever so often, you may need to configure individual mailboxes with limits that are either higher or lower than the mailbox limits on the mailbox store on which they reside Three different mailbox quota limits can be configured for a mailbox: Issue Warning Quota The Issue Warning Quota is the first quota limit a mailbox can reach When a mailbox reaches this limit, Exchange issues a warning message to the mailbox, without impacting the user s ability to send or receive messages As such, it can be thought of as a soft quota Prohibit Send Quota When the mailbox size reaches the Prohibit Send Quota, Exchange stops the user from sending messages The user does continue to receive inbound messages, though Prohibit Send and Receive Quota This is the final frontier, the largest size to which a mailbox can grow When the mailbox reaches this limit, a user can neither send nor receive new messages As such, this can be thought of as a hard quota or limit To configure a mailbox to bypass the mailbox storage quotas on the mailbox store using the Exchange console, follow these steps (as shown in Figure 10-8): 1 Select the mailbox from the Recipient Configuration | Mailbox node 2 In the Actions pane, click the Properties link
