Deployment Options
SharePoint Server is composed of three server roles: application server, front-end web server, and database server You can choose to deploy Microsoft Office SharePoint Server as a standalone server or as a server farm All three server roles will be installed automatically if you choose the Basic installation options, thus creating a standalone configuration that cannot be made part of a server farm Furthermore, it is extremely limited in its ability to scale A Basic installation will only support one CPU and a maximum database size of 4GB The Basic installation will install and use SQL Server 2005 Express edition Choosing the Basic installation options is the easiest way to deploy a standalone server However, if you want to use the SharePoint server in production for anything beyond testing out the product, you will need to perform an Advanced installation If you want to use a single SharePoint server that is not limited and can be a member of a farm later on, you will need to choose the Advanced installation option (see Figure 13-8) and then select Complete Install all components Can add servers to form a SharePoint farm from the custom options
