The least common denominator in a disaster recovery plan is the backup Backups provide the first level of operational continuity The technology that is employed by an organization to back up and restore Exchange data has a far-reaching effect on the overall design of Exchange 2007 Therefore, the decision you make on how you back up Exchange should be made before you deploy Exchange 2007 All other data storage and disaster recovery procedures will follow The Exchange administrator must ensure that decision makers (management) understand that the critical data and the associated backup of that data go beyond the mail stores It is the responsibility of an organization to not just safeguard the mailbox data, but all Exchange related data and the various servers they reside on

Exchange 2007 is composed of five distinct roles Each role has unique configuration data that is critical to its function The Mailbox role and Transport role servers also store critical e-mail data Additionally, Exchange 2007 has a dependency on Exchange data stored in Active Directory In order to recover Exchange 2007, you must be able back up all critical data In Figure 18-1 you can see the various data types that are critical to the Exchange organization The following sections provide the data types for each server role and the location where the data is stored All the data listed is critical to Exchange servers The data locations should be monitored for performance and security Microsoft installed all the server-side

Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery
data into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ directory by default Any changes to the paths will need to be documented for disaster recovery planning
Client Access Servers
The Client Access Server role has a default configuration that facilitates Outlook Web Access and Mobile clients connectivity to mailboxes But the Client Access Server (CAS) performs other critical functions Features such as Autodiscover, ActiveSync, IMAP4, and POP3 are also part of the Client Access Server s configuration
Mailbox Servers
Although the configuration data for a mailbox server stored in Active Directory is critical to the Mailbox server role, it is not the most important data on that server Unlike the other server roles, the most important information on a server with the Mailbox role is the users mailbox and, if they are used, public folder data When a mailbox server is being designed, care is taken to design the disk storage so that databases and transaction logs are stored on separate disk volumes for performance and availability For more information on Exchange 2007 storage and the Mailbox server role, see 6 The same care should be taken to design the Exchange backups to project the users data The physical location of the mailbox data affects the backup solutions available for you to choose from Make sure you are aware of not only the critical data paths, but also the storage technology For example, if you are storing the databases and transaction logs on a storage area network (SAN), you will need specific knowledge in order to configure the SAN Even the RAID controllers for directattached storage (DAS) have complex features that must be understood in order to properly configure them
Hub Transport Servers
The default configuration of a Hub Transport server role will allow Exchange 2000, 2003, and 2007 servers to process and transport messages within an organization Although there is a Queue database on the Hub transport, the data is deleted from the database as soon as the transport has completed relaying the message to the appropriate destination Administrators who are carefully monitoring Hub Transports may additionally have Message Tracking logs and Protocol logs stored on the Hub Transports
