backup can occur, the VSS backups are based on the recovery goals you specify Here are some factors you might consider: Data loss tolerance The maximum amount of Exchange data loss, measured in time, that is acceptable Retention range How long you need the backed-up Exchange data available (both short term and long term) Recovery point schedule be created Full backup schedule Establishes how many incremental snapshots should

The way your organization defines these variable becomes your VSS backup strategy Your backup strategy also reflects your organization s recovery goals In Figure 18-6, you can see a VSS backup strategy based on some tolerance for Exchange data loss For the example in Figure 18-6, the maximum amount of time between snapshots is three hours, which means at no time will there be more than three hours worth of unprotected data For an organization with very low tolerance for data loss, the Exchange 2007 VSS will allow you to set a snapshot schedule as frequently as every 15 minutes The tradeoff is the additional disk storage requirements for the additional snapshots

E-mail Continuity
Seagate in 1996 after the release of Exchange 40 In 1999, the Seagate Software management division was acquired by Veritas In June 2005, Veritas merged with Symantec, who is now the current owner of Backup Exec Microsoft has continued to include NTBackup with Windows Server 2003 The Windows 2003 version of NTBackup will support backing up Exchange 55, 2000, 2003, and even Exchange 2007 once the Exchange management tools are installed The bad news for NTBackup fans is that it is no longer available in Windows Server 2008 NTBackup uses the legacy streaming backup APIs and not the Exchange 2007 VSS writers It is limited in that it can only back up the local machine s data It cannot back up another Exchange server over the network It can, however, save its backups to a network drive and network backup software can be used to back up the NTBackups
Backing Up Exchange 2007 to Disk with NTBackup
Use the following steps to create a backup job for Exchange Server 2007 with NTBackup: 1 Click Start | Run, type ntbackupexe, and click OK 2 Select the Advanced Mode link on the Welcome page 3 Click the Backup tab 4 Expand Microsoft Exchange Server, expand an exchange_servername, and select the check box next to the storage group you want to back up 5 Verify that path is in the in the Backup destination list 6 In the Backup media or file name box, type the path and filename for this backup (for example, C:\E2K7Backups\1stBackup) 7 On the Tools menu, click Options Verify that the Default Backup Type is Normal and then click OK 8 Click Start Backup, review the backup job information, and verify that the settings are appropriate 9 Click Advanced, enable Verify data after backup, and click OK 10 Click Start Backup It is possible to use the Schedule Jobs option to automate the Exchange backups and enforce your backup strategy
VSS Backup for Exchange 2007
The Data Protection Manager, Version 2, from Microsoft fully supports VSS backups of Exchange Server 2007 Some, but not all third-party vendors do Be careful when looking at Exchange 2007 backup software that you choose a vendor that supports Exchange 2007 s VSS Here is a list of some of vendors that provide VSS backup solutions for Exchange 2007: Symantec Backup Exec CommVault Simpana For a current list of Microsoft backup/archive ISV partners for Exchange Server 2007, see http://wwwmicrosoftcom/exchange/partners/2007/backupmspx If you currently have
