Windows Server 2008 brings some remarkable improvements to MSCS The feature is now called Failover Clustering, but the name of the Cluster Service remains unchanged Some of the new features include: New Failover Cluster Manager console The Cluster Administrator tool has been replaced with a new console based on Microsoft Management Console 30 This brings it on par with the Exchange Management Console (EMC) in Exchange Server 2007, with a similar three-pane window and plenty of configuration wizards and shortcuts in the Action pane on the right New quorum model Failover Clustering supports a new hybrid quorum model The quorum type can be selected either during cluster setup or after setup is complete to change from one quorum model to another (see Figure 19-10) The four quorum models include: Node Majority Node Majority is recommended for clusters with an odd number of nodes Each node is given a vote, and the cluster can continue to run as long as a majority of the nodes is available As such, it only makes sense to use it in clusters with three or more nodes Failure of half the nodes minus one node ((Nodes/2) 1) can be sustained In a three-node cluster, failure of one node can be sustained In a five-node cluster, failure of two nodes can be sustained Node Majority can be used for SCC clusters with three or more nodes However, CCR replication is only supported between two nodes As such, although adding a third node to a CCR cluster to be able to use Node Majority is possible, you are essentially wasting a node by doing so

FIGURE 19-10 The Con gure Cluster Quorum Wizard in Windows Server 2008 Failover Cluster Manager console displays the quorum choices and makes recommendations based on cluster con guration, nodes, and storage
Node and Disk Majority Node and Disk Majority is recommended for clusters with an even number of nodes Each node gets a vote, and so does the quorum (aka, the witness disk ) residing on shared storage like traditional quorums in previous versions of Windows Server A failure of half the total number of nodes can be sustained if the witness disk remains online The cluster can also remain up if the witness disk is lost but a majority of the nodes are online Node and File Share Majority (for clusters with special configurations) This is the equivalent of Majority Node Set with File Share Witness in Windows Server 2003, and is recommended for two-node clusters It is also similar to Node and Disk Majority, except the witness disk is replaced by a File Share Witness (FSW) The FSW has a vote in forming the majority in case of a node outage, but it is hosted on a shared folder on a server that does not participate in the cluster No Majority: Disk Only This is the equivalent of a traditional shared quorum, residing on a shared storage volume Outage of the quorum results in outage of the cluster
