The Windows Server 2003 Performance Advisor (SPA) is a hybrid monitoring and reporting tool It allows you to monitor configuration settings, performance counters, and tracing information Because Exchange 2007 runs on 64-bit hardware only, you will need to make sure you use SPA Version 2, which offers additional benefits over Version 1 besides 64-bit support You can control the way in which collected data is stored by setting size restrictions and enabling circular logging You can generate trend reports based on the performance counters you monitor Additional information about IIS has been included in new XML templates A new DNS data collector group has been added You can download the Windows 2003 Performance Advisor at http://wwwmicrosoftcom/downloads/details aspx familyid=61a41d78-e4aa-47b9-901b-cf85da075a73&displaylang=en Here s a list of the data collector groups you can use: System Overview Active Directory ADAM IIS Print Spooler Performance Counters File Context Switch DNS These role-based collector groups are defined by the Template_Server_Rolesxml file You can configure the SPA to use one or more of these collection groups by using the Add/Repair Data Collector Groups option in the Edit menu SPA Version 2 is shown in Figure 20-7 Additional templates are available for creating custom data collator groups, including the following: Additional IIS Roles (Template_Enhanced_IISxml) Kernel Tracing (Template_Kernel_Specialxml) IT Study Roles (Template_IT_Studyxml) Multiple Providers Sample (Template_Multiple_Provides_Samplexml) Custom Provider Sample (Template_Custom_Samplexml)

One of the more difficult monitoring tasks to accomplish is mailbox profiling Yet the ability to profile individual mailboxes is the most essential element for capacity planning In the day-to-day maintenance and monitoring of Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers, you will want to capture information about the mailboxes servers, storage groups, databases, and the mailboxes themselves You could spend money on one of the third-party tools available, and it would likely be worth the investment At a minimum, you will want to use the Microsoft Exchange Server Profile Analyzer (EPA) The statistics you can derive from running the EPA

Windows Server 2003 Performance Advisor
will help you make critical capacity planning and maintenance decisions Figure 20-8 shows the epawinexe (GUI) interface It is also possible to run the EPA tools from the command line as well Because this tool retrieves mailbox statistics at the server, store, and mailbox levels, there are explicit permissions that the monitoring account will need for the tool to run successfully The minimum permissions required are as follows: Exchange View-Only Administrator Full Mailbox access to all mailboxes You can use the EMC or the EMS to add the EPA monitoring account to the View-Only Administrator role But you will need to use the Add-ADPermissions cmdlet from the EMS in order to grant Full Mailbox access to mailboxes on an Exchange 2007 server It is possible to grant permissions to an entire Exchange server, as shown in Figure 20-9 For more details on the EPA, see the TechNet article, Microsoft Exchange Server Profile Analyzer, at http://technetmicrosoftcom/en-us/library/bb508856aspx
Microsoft Operation Manager
The monitoring tools we have reviewed so far either come with Windows or Exchange or they are free to download and use However, they tend to have specific uses, and some are a little more intuitive than others You could easily spend the majority of each day performing

Exchange Server Pro le Analyzer Tool
all the operation tasks necessary to keep Exchange running smoothly In many environments this in unrealistic due to limited personnel When this is the case, additional tools that take the burden of monitoring the organization off of the administrator are necessary This is where a tool such as Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) comes into play

Part VI:
E-mail Continuity
Microsoft Operation Manager is not free and it has additional requirements that make its deployment much more complex than the other tools we have looked at so far However, once you have MOM installed, you ll find it to be the most powerful monitoring tool available from Microsoft The latest version of MOM is available as part of the new System Center from Microsoft However, at the time of this writing, native support for Exchange Server 2007 is limited to Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Ironically, Exchange Server 2003 is currently supported in System Center Support for Exchange 2007 comes in the form of a management pack MOM by itself is limited in its monitoring know-how to the Windows operating system Its knowledge can be extended by importing management packs, as shown in Figure 20-10 Although MOM is not free, the Exchange Server 2007 management pack is free It can be found at http://wwwmicrosoftcom/downloads/detailsaspx FamilyID=30eebc7c-a35a41ae-9cd1-2047847fde85&DisplayLang=en Once the Exchange 2007 management pack is imported into MOM, it can begin to provide administrators with valuable information To provide administrators with information quickly, the Exchange 2007 management pack takes advantage of cmdlets in the Exchange Management Shell (EMS) to gather information about the health of Exchange 2007 Just through the installation of the Exchange Server 2007 management pack, MOM will be preconfigured to run the following cmdlets: Test-MAPIConnectivity Test-Mailflow Test-ExchangeSearch Test-ServiceHealth Test-SystemHealth Test-UMConnectivity Test-EdgeSynchronization
