Message Tracking has been a part of Exchange for a long time, with an evolving interface In Exchange 2007, Message Tracking is configured using the EMS, but the interface is accessed through the EMC Tools section Message Tracking can follow the path of a message through the Exchange organization from Edge to Mailbox, or vice versa, by querying a log file for attributes of the message in question Figure 21-14 shows the input screen for a Message Tracking query Like many places in the GUI, the Message Tracking parameter window also shows the equivalent EMS cmdlet updated as options are entered in the GUI By default, the

The Message Tracking tool applies the criteria to its search and returns the matching content summary You can select individual messages from those messages returned by the filtered query by selecting them and clicking Next at the bottom Before showing the single message, the tool will first show the parameters screen with unique identifiers in place to extract the single message from the Message Tracking logs Figure 21-15 shows the initial results page from our query The columns headings are clickable to sort the output page by that value

Message Tracking is enabled by default, which is different from its predecessors The log file location has also been updated for Exchange 2007 The Message Tracking log is now found in %programfiles%\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\Logs\MessageTracking\ As mentioned, Message Tracking is configured using the EMS The location of the Message Tracking log is easily moved with the following cmdlet:
>Set-TransportServer <servername> -MessageTrackingLogPath <Full_path>
For example, to move our Message Tracking log to D:\Exchange\Tracking Log\, we would employ the following command:
>Set-TransportServer E2K7-MB-02 -MessageTrackingLogPath "d:\Exchange\Tracking Log"
The server name here is required, and the path must be the complete path local to the server If the path does not exist, it will be created when the command is executed The folder, by default, has a maximum size of 250MB Older tracking logs are deleted as new ones are created to fit within that limit The maximum folder size is easily configured, again using the EMS The log files compress well also, and a script can be used to compress and archive older tracking logs on a regular basis if company policy dictates that they need to be saved To set the maximum tracking log folder size, issue the following cmdlet:
>Set-TransportServer <servername> -MessageTrackingLogMaxDirectorySize 750MB
The tracking log file size and age are also controlled by similar parameters We use Set-TransportServer to enable or disable Message Tracking as follows:
>Set-TransportServer <servername> MessageTrackingLogEnabled <$true | $false>
The cmdlet that initiates queries as you have seen using the GUI is Get-MessageTrackingLog Entering Get-MessageTrackingLog without any parameters will return the entire log file A sample filtered query using the EMS might look like this:
>Get-MessageTrackingLog -Sender "seankelly@virtuecorpcom" -EventID "FAIL" MessageSubject "Monthly Report" -Start "9/9/2007 8:00:00 AM" -End "9/9/2007 10:30:00 AM"
Trace Control
When you first launch Trace Control from the ExTRA, a pop-up advises you that no reader is available on the server for Exchange trace logs, as shown in Figure 21-16, and that you should enlist the assistance of Customer Service and Support (CSS) Trace Control writes very granular debug tracing information to a file called ExchangeDebugTracesetl, located by default at %programfiles%\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ This tool is really for use when troubleshooting symptoms, not revealed through standard administrator troubleshooting and the assistance of Microsoft CSS is required
