When discussing Exchange Server 2007, it is inevitable to start off comparing the functionality provided by components of Exchange Server 2000/2003 If anything, the ability to map a new or changed feature to the functionality in previous versions makes understanding the new features and functionality much easier for those familiar with the previous versions A mail host needs to be told what SMTP domains it should accept e-mail for, and also whether it is authoritative for such domains Additionally, the mail system needs to have recipients with e-mail addresses from such SMTP domains assigned to them Otherwise, the mail system would not have any place to which to deliver such messages (Note that specific address space sharing scenarios are not discussed here) In Exchange Server 2000/2003, this was the job of recipient policies They tell Exchange which address spaces (domains) to accept inbound mail for and to generate e-mail addresses for recipients using those domains

Exchange Server 2007 splits that functionality into two new features or components accepted domains and e-mail address policies Accepted domains tell Exchange Server 2007 transport servers which SMTP domains to receive inbound e-mail for The Exchange organization can be authoritative for mail delivery to those domains, or it simply accepts e-mail for them and relays it to SMTP servers outside the Exchange organization Generally, an Exchange organization is said to be authoritative for a domain if it hosts mailboxes for that domain In this context, the term authoritative also means it is responsible for generating non-delivery reports (NDRs) for those addresses for which a recipient is not found (or if messages cannot be delivered for any other reason)

By default, Exchange (HT) uses the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the root domain in the Active Directory forest as an accepted domain The first AD domain set up in the forest is known as the forest root domain Additional accepted domains can be created as and when required You cannot modify the default accepted domain However, you can make any other accepted domain the default To receive inbound e-mail, you need to have at least one accepted domain that is registered with a domain registrar Setting up Exchange to receive inbound Internet mail is discussed later in this chapter

NOTE The ET is not a member of the domain and does not have access to the FQDN, so the default
accepted domain must be designated when you re configuring the ET You can create an accepted domain without having Exchange generate any e-mail addresses using the domain However, to use a domain in an e-mail address policy, it must exist as an accepted domain first Accepted domains should be created on a Hub Transport server If any Edge servers exist in the topology, it is recommended that you use EdgeSync to have these replicated to ET servers To create a new accepted domain using the Exchange console, follow these steps: 1 Expand the Organization Configuration | Hub Transport | Accepted Domains tab 2 In the Action pane, click New Accepted Domain to start the New Accepted Domain Wizard 3 On the New Accepted Domain page, enter the following details: Name Enter a unique name for the accepted domain Enter the SMTP domain name (for example, foocom) Accepted domain
The default accepted domain type This is set to Authoritative but can be changed to Internal Relay or External Relay
NOTE Internal relay and external relay domains are discussed later in this section
4 Click New and then click Finish to complete the New Accepted Domain Wizard (see Figure 7-1)

Creating a new accepted domain using the Exchange console
Here s how to create a new accepted domain using the Exchange shell:
New-AcceptedDomain -Name Exchangepedia -DomainName "exchangepediacom" -DomainType authoritative
The Accepted Domains tab in the Exchange console does not display which accepted domain is the default In SP1 this has been added to the properties page of accepted domains The ability to set an accepted domain as the default is also added as a contextsensitive menu choice To set an accepted domain as the default using the Exchange console, right-click the accepted domain and select Set as Default This option does not appear as a choice for an existing default accepted domain Use the following command to set an Accepted Domain as the default:
