By now it s becoming clear that the Ribbon menu has the functions we need to control the display of the chart We re going to continue this formatting process with Figure 3-38 by introducing a new element a picture background image for the chart
1 Click the Plot Area icon in the Background menu group, on the Ribbon menu 2 3 4 5
Layout tab Click the More Plot Area Options option in the pop-up menu Click the Fill menu choice in the Format Plot Area dialog box Click the Picture Or Texture Fill button Click the Clip Art button
Figure 3-38 Excel 2007 charts importing a picture for background fill
Microsoft Office 2007 Business Intelligence 6 In the Select Picture dialog box, click the checkbox called Include Content
From Office Online 7 Click the Class Students picture to select it 8 Click the Import button 9 Click the Transparency slider control to change the transparency to 60% The effect of adding a picture for the background is actually done to help convey the message of the chart data, which in our working example is a data story about students and their test scores
BI TIP
It may seem superfluous to cosmetically arrange the elements of a chart and to add pictures, but it really does help deliver a business intelligence message The formatting results in a good first impression that carries over to analysis of the data, and a picture can immediately convey the real-world context within which the data is to be interpreted or acted upon Figure 3-39 shows an important step, where we format the Data Series lines in the chart to make them stand out so that people look at the data lines first when they see the chart
1 Click a line in the Chart to select it, and then right-click to open the pop-up menu 2 Click Format Data Series on the pop-up menu 3 Click the Line Color menu choice in the Format Data Series dialog box 4 Click the Solid Line option button 5 Click the Color drop-down control to open the color palette, and choose Blue 6 Click the Line Style menu choice in the Format Data Series dialog box 7 Click the Width text box control, and change the value to 15 pt
The preceding steps should be repeated for the send line in the chart, and a contrasting color can then be chosen to make it easier to discern the two distinct lines in the chart This is important so that people who look at the chart can easily see the different data series (although they might not know the term data series) This avoids confusion and leads to a more compelling chart presentation
