This is the new 2007 Excel table user interface, and it s where you ll do most of your work in this chapter The top-level Ribbon menu is divided into tabs that provide a reasonable grouping of menu options For some work in Excel you ll find that new context tabs become available to the right of the original Ribbon menu tabs to provide special items needed in working with Excel features that have been selected This is exactly how the new Office 2007 Ribbon menu is supposed to work; menu tabs with new choices are automatically made available to the user whenever we re working with Excel items that require additional tools The following explanations correspond to the similarly labeled areas in Figure 6-3 This is where the File, Save, and Open menu choices are found Also, this holds the menu choice of Prepare | Properties to bring up a dialog box where you can examine or edit the Author, Title, etc, of your workbook b Ribbon menu tabs This is where you can choose groups of menu options for working with workbooks The Home tab has most of the familiar menu choices for working with data including Conditional Formatting, which is a great new feature of Excel 2007 (we discuss this in depth in other chapters) c Zoom slider control A very useful part of the new 2007 interface is the Zoom slider control that always appears at the lower right of the screen It s amazing how often we find ourselves using this to zoom the display in or out, to bring whatever we want to see within the viewable screen

Microsoft Office 2007 Business Intelligence
It is worth pausing at this point for a brief discussion of the new Office 2007 menu layout Microsoft has put a great deal of effort into consolidating the thousands of Office menu commands and choices into this new format All of the Office 2007 applications use the new Ribbon menu approach for their user interface; notably Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word Our step-by-step instructions in this chapter will primarily use the Ribbon menu icon-based tabbed/grouped interface to accomplish our work, for the purpose of consistency However, right-click and context-sensitive menus are also a significant part of the Office 2007 interface, and we ll use them whenever we go beyond the immediate options of the Ribbon menu As you gain familiarity with the new Office 2007 interface, you ll probably develop your own favorite right-click menu paths in everyday work routines
BI TIP
The new Office 2007 Ribbon menu is a big jump forward for Office applications, and it is perhaps the most important element of commonality to tie together Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word since the early days of Office integration years ago For the Excel add-in Data Mining tools it organizes common tasks under the Analyzer tab, and advanced tasks under the Data Mining tab The basic elements of the Ribbon menu are straightforward; the Office button, tabs, groups within the tabs, and icons within the groups Office 2007 sports a much richer set of icons that display across the Ribbon menu and provide an intuitive idea of the actions that can be accomplished by clicking the icons Furthermore, many of the icons provide a live preview capability where the on-screen spreadsheet display will change as you hover the mouse over an icon but won t actually change the spreadsheet until you click and choose the icon action This really makes working with Excel 2007 much faster, since you don t have to keep changing spreadsheet elements back and forth to get visual feedback on formatting and row-column arrangements In fact, you can mouse over a gallery of choices that may have a large number of options, and very quickly find the appearance you want Another helpful aspect of the Office 2007 Ribbon menu design is that the tabs and groups of icons follow your workflow of creating content So with Excel 2007 we start at the Home tab with the common text and number formatting menu items, followed by the Insert tab, where we can start on a PivotTable / PivotChart inserted onto the spreadsheet, for example Subsequent tabs hold groups of icons for more advanced formulas and data work, and at the end of the default Tab strip you find tabs for Review and View to help in the finalization of the workbook Note you ll always wind up back at the Office
