In this chapter we have shown how Access can be used to build a web application This included building queries that act like views for our web application We also introduced the Web Matrix web development tool, which can be downloaded for free The combination of Access and Web Matrix enable low-cost and easy-toimplement web applications to be deployed It is also a great combination for building quick and easy prototype applications

Microsoft Office Access 2003 Professional Results
n the last chapter we saw how to do simple ASPNET Access applications with Web Matrix Now, in this chapter, we are going to move to Microsoft s enterprise development platform, Visual Studio NET With Visual Studio NET we can build ASPNET applications with the full power of Visual Basic or C# In this chapter we are going to build a sample help ticket system for providing customer support We are going to utilize Visual Basic NET along with ASPNET web pages We will see how Access can be utilized as the database engine behind more sophisticated applications This example will also demonstrate how Access can be utilized for prototyping enterprise-wide applications The database structure, queries, and code created can be migrated to the enterprise platform
Utilizing NET
It is not possible to cover all of the issues related to utilizing NET in this chapter There have been dozens (if not hundreds) of books written on ASPNET development using Visual Studio NET For this chapter we will be utilizing Visual Basic NET for our primary coding platform All coding will be done using the code behind technique, which allows the page interface to be separated from the Visual Basic code ASPNET pages will be created and will leverage the controls provided in the Visual Studio design environment You might consider reading ASPNET: The Complete Reference or ASPNET: A Beginner's Guide (both McGraw-Hill/Osborne, 2002) to become more familiar with ASPNET development In addition to NET, we will be utilizing JavaScript code to implement some of the interface features of our application There are some interesting techniques we will demonstrate for using a little client-side JavaScripting in the ASPNET environment
Designing the Help Ticket System Database
The help ticket system is focused on allowing end users of a particular system or service to be able to log a help ticket and track it For the support group, it allows them to view and claim tickets The tickets can then be managed to completion
CHAPTER 6: Programming Microsoft Access with NET
Our example in this chapter is the base foundation for the system This foundation can be easily expanded to provide a number of useful features
Business Rule Requirements
The business rules for our help ticket data are fairly straightforward At the core of the system is a ticket that has a creation date, a creator, a support owner, a description of the problem, and a description of the resolution A ticket can go through several different stages of support, including being submitted, reviewed, in progress, and closed/completed Each of these status stages has status notes, a start time, and an owner for that status Finally, we will have users for the system Some of the users are designated as administrators, and they will manage the ticket statuses Administrator users will be able to claim tickets as they come in and work to resolve them Standard users can only create tickets and view the status of their tickets The following shows the logical view of the requirements:
Designing the Help Ticket System Database
In addition to the capabilities outlined for the users, we also want to be able to search the ticket database for similar tickets to help resolve current open tickets
