But, the next list just shows the first name, street address, etc If we page through the report, we will see that the data goes across many pages and there is a listing for each item in the basket This isn t quite what we are looking for To fix this report up, go into the Design view for the report What we see is that the Detail section of the report contains all of the fields for the order, payment, and basket Thus, these data values are being repeatedly displayed with each basket item What we need to do is move the fields we only want displayed once per order into the header section where the last name is being displayed Figure 10-23 shows the current Design view Go ahead and rework the fields and lay them out as appropriate for the report Figure 10-24 shows an example of how the report might be laid out Note that the only fields in the Detail section are for the basket items Now the report can be viewed and the orders will be grouped by order date and last name, and the fields will be organized together properly Figure 10-25 shows the report Note the structure for the different orders With Access fast and powerful reporting tools, creating administrative and analytical reports for maintaining a system is very useful and powerful If you have

Summary
Our Access Data Project example demonstrates how Access and SQL Server can work in harmony The many benefits of Access can be leveraged against the SQL Server Note that in this chapter we created a database from scratch For existing SQL Server databases, ADPs can also be set up

Reworked report
Keep in mind that ADPs can also be deployed to desktop users If there are specific users who need extended data entry or reporting capabilities that go beyond the web browser, an ADP can be an excellent solution for the client interface to the database Functionality is quick to build and easily deployed In addition, ADPs are an excellent environment for quickly prototyping application functionality against SQL Server In the next chapter, we will explore issues surrounding database management for Access databases The topics we will explore include replication, security, backups, and performance

Managing Access Databases
Microsoft Office Access 2003 Professional Results
ccess databases need to be properly managed even though they are not as sophisticated as enterprise-level databases We have options for securing, replicating, backing up, and structuring the databases, and each must be considered in the context of the use of the database In this chapter, we will explore the different database management techniques that can be utilized with Access
Database Management Overview
When working with databases, it is important to implement the best practices for managing the database Working with Access can be a little deceiving because it can be so simple to set up and deploy a database One can get a false sense of safety because Access can be so simple to work with, but just consider what would happen if you linked up enterprise data in an Access Data Project (ADP) and didn t secure that Access interface or, if you provided your Access database to users and they could access the underlying data structure, code, macros, etc (Deploying copies of the data, backups, and other data management issues are also critical to consider) Fortunately, over the years Access has added features to the program that provide options for tackling each of these issues While these features are not as robust or in-depth as those of SQL Server or other enterprise databases, if used properly they can meet the primary needs of the database manager
