We are going to perform a direct synchronization, which is our only option Note the option to change the replica into the Design Master Click OK to continue with the synchronization Once the synchronization is done, all of the changes will be synced between the two databases Because the data changes were only made in one of the databases, there are no conflicts Even if we made changes in both databases, as long as it was to different records, there would be no conflicts If we were to make changes to the same record and field we would have a conflict from the replication that needs to be resolved Make changes to the same record and field in both the Design Master and the replica Then run the synchronization process

CHAPTER 11: Managing Access Databases
For this example, the Category table data was updated in the Models database The name of the category for the same record was updated in both the Design Master and replica Then a synchronization was run When the synchronization is complete, Access indicates that there is a conflict that needs to be resolved Upon completion of the synchronization, select the option to resolve the conflict (or select it from the Replication submenu) The Conflict Viewer is displayed in Figure 11-7 The viewer shows several things to use to help resolve the conflict First, the reason for the conflict is displayed In this case, it is a conflict in updating the same records and fields Access predetermines a winner and a loser based on Design Master versus the replica, time of the change, etc Note the name fields for the two records This is where the change was made in both databases We can now select which change we want to use as the final change Or, we can postpone the resolution for a later date Go ahead and select one of the data updates to be applied

The Microsoft Office 2003 Developer Kit comes with a Replication Manager tool as well as the Jet and Replication Objects (JRO) With these tools, additional capabilities are available for managing replication and synchronization In addition to straight full database replications, we can also set up partial replication This can be very helpful for segmenting via filters where data should be replicated Access provides a Partial Replica Wizard that makes setting up partial replications easy Click the Tools menu and select Replication On the replication submenu, select the Partial Replica Wizard option The first screen of the wizard allows you to either set up a new partial replica or modify an existing replica Select create and click the Next button to continue The next screen provides options for specifying where the replica will be stored and what type of replica will be created There are also options for deciding if the replica will be read-only and preventing deletes of data
In this case, select a global replica and determine where the replica should be stored Click the Next button to continue The next dialog box provides options for

filtering what data will go into the replica This is where we can segment the data for the replica An example of pulling all model data where the category is greater than 7 or less than 3 is shown here:
Replication
The next dialog box allows us to determine what related tables will be included in the partial replica The records in these tables will be filtered to only pull records that are related to the returned records from the filter You can choose which of these tables will be included Click Next to continue The last dialog box indicates the replica will be created and generates a report of the tables and filters in the replica Now open up the partial replica If you go to the Category table, you will find that only records with a category ID that meets the criteria show up With this partial replication technique, we can segment data for management across multiple replicas and yet have the data still stored in a central repository Replication is a complicated topic that covers many different issues, techniques, and tools We have touched on the key topics of replication, and there is much more to dig into that would cover several chapters Microsoft s MSDN web site and the Office 2003 help system provide extended information on utilizing Access replica technology In addition, the Replication Manager provides extended functionality that should be analyzed
