When you re in Editing mode, you need to move around in the field data and insert or delete characters Many of the same keys are used, but with different results
Changing the Tab Order
Each time you press tab in Form view, the cursor moves to another field The progression of the cursor through the fields in the form is called the tab order Each text box control is assigned a tab index number indicating its position in the sequence The first control in the order has 0 as the tab index number, the second has 1, and so on Access sets the tab order to match the order in which the fields were added to the design If you open the Current Workorders form in Form view and press tab several times, you ll that see the order isn t logical The tab order reflects the way the fields were originally positioned in the query grid and then placed in the form design Some of the fields have been moved in the design and the tab order doesn t automatically change to match The three fields added later are at the end of the tab order To change the tab order so that the cursor moves more logically through the records, do the following: 1 Open the form in Design view and click the Detail section selector
11:
U s i n g t h e F o r m To o l s
2 On the Layout tab s Control Layout group, click the Tab Order command The Tab Order dialog box opens, showing a list of all of the text box controls in the Detail section
PART II
3 To reposition a control, click the row selector to select the field, then move the mouse pointer to the row selector, and then drag the row to a new position You can also select a group of rows and reposition them as a group 4 Repeat step 3 until the order is the way you want it, and then click OK
TIP Clicking the Auto Order button in the Tab Order dialog box rearranges the controls in order
from left-to-right and top-to-bottom If this is the way you want the cursor to move through the fields, click Auto Order instead of moving the controls by hand Text box controls have three properties on the Other property tab that involve the tab order: AutoTab When set to Yes, automatically moves the cursor to the next field in the tab order when the last character permitted by an input mask or the field size is entered Tab Stop Set to No to keep the cursor from reaching the field by means of pressing tab You can still select the field for editing; it just isn t part of the tab order
