All you need to do is create the macro with the actions that you want carried out at startup and save it with the name AutoExec A database can have only one macro named AutoExec When you open a database, all the startup options that you set in the Current Database group of Access Options take place first You can see these by clicking the Microsoft Office button and choosing Access Options Then Access looks for a macro named AutoExec, if one exists, and executes the actions in it You can bypass both the startup options and the AutoExec macro by pressing shift when you open the database

Properly constructed macros carry out actions when you want them to and in the way that you want They re useful for responding to user input and manipulating data They are easy to construct and test and provide a degree of automation to your database As you work with macros, you can begin to see their potential In the next two chapters, you will investigate modifying the ribbons and customizing the Quick Access toolbar The Navigation Pane can also be customized to provide groups of special database objects that relate to the purpose and structure of the database Macros are also used in later chapters for building custom dialog boxes

he ribbon, the new user interface with activity-oriented tabs and groups of commands, presents a flexible portal for using Office Access 2007 Even though the ribbon has been designed to make every action available to you as you work, you can make some changes to it for example, if you print reports frequently, you can add a print button to the Quick Access toolbar You can also move the ribbon and the Quick Access toolbar to make more room in the active window You can also create customized dialog boxes for entering or retrieving specific information from the database and keep your startup options from a previous version of Access
Working with the Ribbon
Although you can t customize the commands on the Access 2007 ribbon, you can manipulate them to fit your needs The commands shown in the ribbon relate specifically to the current activity, but the way they are displayed depends on the current width of your Access window
Resizing the Ribbon
The ribbon is designed to fit the maximized Access window When the window is maximized, you will see the commands widely spaced with their names displayed
If you are using Access in a narrower window, the ribbon is resized to fit The icons may not appear in the order that they appear in the maximized window The commands might also appear compressed horizontally, and many of the command names are removed, leaving only the icon They can also appear stacked in a column of three icons without command

names instead of in a row with command names For example, consider the commands in the Macro and Analyze groups:
Shrinking the window width further reduces the ribbon and eventually hides it altogether Some groups, for example, the Show/Hide group, will then be represented by a single icon with a down-arrow that you can click to display the commands within the group in a context menu
NOTE If you have created a custom ribbon using XML, you can use it with your database In the
Current Database page of the Access Options window, select Ribbon Name in the Toolbar Options and choose the ribbon from the drop-down list
Hiding and Restoring the Ribbon
If the ribbon is taking up too much of your work space, you can hide it, either briefly or for the whole session You can hide the ribbon in three ways: Press ctrl-f1 Double-click an active ribbon tab
