You can change column widths individually, but rows are different: they re all the same height and when you change the height of one, you change them all For example, suppose you have a Memo field that usually contains two or three lines of text and you want to read them in Datasheet view If you increase the row height to double or triple, you can fit the text in the space allowed You might be able to combine adjusting the column width with increasing the row height to achieve the proper balance of dimensions The row height is modified the same way as the column width: by dragging a sizing line with the mouse or by entering the new height in a dialog box To change the row height with the mouse, move the mouse pointer to any one of the row sizing lines in the record selector area The mouse pointer changes shape to a plus (+) sign again, but, this time, the arrow s pointing up and down Click and drag the line until the rows reach the desired height, and then release the mouse All the rows will be the same height To set a more exact row height, choose Row Height from the More command in the Records group to open the Row Height dialog box The insertion point can be anywhere in the datasheet when you choose Row Height To use the shortcut menu, you must right-click in a selected row or any row selector, and then choose Row Height from the shortcut menu The Row Height dialog box is similar to the Column Width dialog box, except there s no Best Fit option The height is measured in points and the Standard Height option depends on the default font size

Two other properties of a datasheet deal with the display of the data Freezing a column causes the data in it to remain on the screen as you scroll right to see fields in a long record Hiding a column prevents the data from displaying in the datasheet Neither of these properties changes the way the data is stored, only the way it s displayed

If your datasheet has more columns than can fit across the screen, some of the information moves off the screen as you scroll right to see the rest of the data One or two of these fields might contain information, such as the product number or a customer name that identifies the record When you re editing the table data, keeping this data on the screen is helpful, so you can be sure you re editing the right records When you freeze a column on the screen, the column and its contents are automatically moved to the left of the datasheet and kept on the screen, even when you scroll right To freeze a column, right-click in the column header and choose Freeze Columns from the shortcut menu To freeze several adjacent columns, select them all by clicking the column headers before choosing Freeze Columns If you want to freeze nonadjacent columns, freeze them one at a time in the order you want them to appear at the left of the screen Access then moves them, one by one, to the left side of the datasheet You can also use the More shortcut menu in the Records group on the Home tab to freeze columns To unfreeze the columns, on the Home tab s Records group, click More and choose Unfreeze from the context menu You can also right-click in one of the frozen columns and choose Unfreeze All Columns from the shortcut menu
