When a Web Part is added to a Web Parts page, it may not be immediately useful Because Web Parts are generalized so they can be reused multiple times, the properties of a Web Part must be configured for it to function For example, if the My Inbox Web Part (see Figure 15-15) is included on a page, it cannot function without additional information and property settings The My Inbox Web Part interacts with Microsoft Exchange server to read and send e-mail However, just adding the My Inbox Web Part to a My Site page will not automatically add e-mail functionality to the page Virtually all Web Parts must have some properties set for them

to function The My Inbox Web Part must be set to communicate with Microsoft Exchange Server This means the Mail server address (Mailbox) property of this Web Part must be set to the path location of the Exchange server before the page will receive e-mail from the Exchange server
Web Part Galleries
A Web Part gallery is a grouping of Web Parts from which specific Web Parts can be selected when you are creating a Web Part page MOSS organizes four Web Part galleries: The Site gallery Contains all the default Web Parts available for publishing to the Web Parts page For example, if your SharePoint site was named Digital In-Site, you would see a Digital In-Site gallery listed (see Figure 15-16) Because the Site Gallery contains a large number of Web Parts, you have the option to filter the list of Web Parts by function The Closed gallery Contains Web Parts that have been published to a Web Parts zone on the Web Parts page, but that are currently closed and, therefore, not displayed on the Web Parts page The Server gallery Holds published common Web Parts that have been made available to all sites to ease Web Part administration
