Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) defines a group of extensions for the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) that facilitates users to collaborate on documents stored on remote web servers WebDAV was developed toward fulfilling the vision of making the Web a truly readable and writable resource that supports the ability of users to create, modify, and even move documents stored remotely on a web server or a web share WebDAV was officially implemented in March 2007 when Request for Change (RFC) 2518 was accepted by the Internet Engineering Steering Group Nearly all operating systems included support for WebDAV The features defined in the WebDAV protocol include overwrite protection; the capability to create, remove, or relocate documents; the capability to query author and document creation and modification information; and a collections function that allows documents to be referenced and managed as a group
