MOSS s Business Data Catalog enables users to find and analyze business data Because business data and its by-product, business intelligence, are commonly sensitive and proprietary in nature, it is very important that it be secure, and that only those users who require access to it are allowed access If you intend to link business applications to the BDC, you must also ensure the integrity of their data is maintained as well

The initial step in providing access to business data is to grant access to the administrator of the Shared Services Provider (SSP) under which the BDC is to be created The SSP administrator requires permission to access the SSP administration pages for the BDC as well as the BDC itself To configure administrator permissions to the BDC service, perform the following steps: 1 From the Windows Server desktop, open the SharePoint 30 Central Administration web page 2 Click the Application Management tab

3 On the Application Management page, click the Create Or Configure This Farm s Shared Services link under the Office SharePoint Server Shared Services heading 4 On the Manage This Farm s Shared Services page, click the link for the SSP you wish to configure TIP You can also access the Shared Services Administration page for a particular SSP by clicking the link for the SSP in the Quick Launch menu in the Shared Services Administration section 5 On the Shared Services Administration page of the SSP you selected, click the link for Business Data Catalog permissions under the Business Data Catalog section to open the Manage Permissions: Business Data Catalog page (see Figure 21-1) 6 If the administrator you wish to assign to the SSP is not already listed, click the Add Users/Groups option on the navigation bar to open the Add Users/ Groups: Business Data Catalog page (see Figure 21-2) 7 Enter the username of the administrator you wish to grant permissions to and check the checkboxes corresponding to the permissions levels you wish to grant to this administrator 8 Click the Save button to save the permissions and add the administrator to the BDC permissions list

While it may seem like we just accomplished this task in the preceding section, granting access to the pages within an SSP is separate from granting a user administrative rights to the BDC In most new installations of MOSS, this step may not be required, given that the administrator who installed the system is already granted these permissions However, should you wish to grant this access to another user with administrative rights, perform the following steps: 1 On the SharePoint 30 Central Administration web page, click the Application Management tab 2 On the Application Management page, click the Create Or Configure This Farm s Shared Services link under the Office SharePoint Server Shared Services heading 3 On the Manage This Farm s Shared Services page, click the link for the SSP you wish to configure 4 On the SSP s home page, click the Site Actions button to open its drop-down menu and click the Site Settings option 5 On the Site Settings page, click the link for Site Collection Administrators under the Users And Permissions heading to open the Site Collection Administrators page (see Figure 21-3) 6 In the Site Collection Administrators section, enter the user name(s) of the administrators to whom you wish to grant access to the pages of the SSP 7 Click the OK button to save the administrators assigned to the SSP content

Like other MOSS services, like Excel Services, the BDC can be included under the control of the Single Sign-On (SSO) service SSO is able to grant a user access to multiple data sources and services without the need of the user having to log in to each data source or service individually SSO credentials can be created for individual applications defined in the BDC, which is discussed later in the next section NOTE See 19 for a detailed description of the process used to configure SSO
