Your first concern with any new software installation should be to check for security updates and service packs for each of the system software components running on your servers, including Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Office 2007, SQL Server, and MOSS Microsoft Windows Server 2003 can be configured to receive Automatic Updates from Microsoft You can choose from four options to receive automatic updates: Automatic (recommended) Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them Notify me but don t automatically download or install them Turn off Automatic Updates

download and install any available updates and you will be automatically protected, unless a reboot is required to complete the installation Keep in mind that the automatic setting still requires some administrative oversight Some administrators prefer to review updates before installing them, in which case the second and third options allow you more control over which updates are installed and when they are installed This is a good compromise if you require additional testing or approval before installing updates You may choose to turn off automatic updates if you have another process for installing updates or wish to manually manage updates

No server environment is complete without some form of antivirus protection Antivirus software protects the server at the file level, but some antivirus programs can be configured to work directly with MOSS at the library Web Part level When MOSS is configured to work with a compatible antivirus program, any files that are added to, or viewed from, a library will be scanned for viruses, and an appropriate action will be taken if a virus is found These actions include attempting to remove the virus from the file or blocking the file from being accessed More on this topic later in the chapter in the section entitled Applying Antivirus

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) is a free downloadable tool that can be used to scan your MOSS environment for common security vulnerabilities, incorrectly configured security options, and missing security updates and operating system service packs 1 Download and install the latest version of MBSA at http://wwwmicrosoft com/mbsa 2 Launch the MBSA The installation should create a desktop icon, as well as add MBSA to the Start menu under All Programs 3 On the MBSA start page (see Figure 7-2), click the Scan A Computer link and specify the computer to be scanned by its computer name or IP address 4 Click the Start Scan link MBSA connects to Microsoft to download updated security information and then begin scanning your computer The scan can be resource intensive at times, but doesn t take very long to run When the scan is complete, a comprehensive report is generated The report (see Figure 7-3) can be copied or printed for future reference as you resolve your existing security issues 5 Correct any deficiencies the report identifies promptly It is a good habit to periodically run MBSA to analyze your MOSS servers and ensure your security environment has not changed

Security Best Practices
In addition to the technologies and services discussed in this section, there are additional security best practices you should consider implementing to protect your MOSS servers: Restrict console logon to administrators only Consider eliminating hardware that uses removable media Use complex passwords A complex password consists of eight or more characters and is a mix of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols Don t allow existing passwords to be reused Consider implementing an account lockout policy to limit the effectiveness of a hacker guessing passwords through brute force
