Information Rights Management
Information Rights Management is a Microsoft Office technology that restricts what can be done to a file once it has been downloaded The creator of a document or an administrator can assign file-level permissions that control who can access a document or an e-mail message and specifically what each allowed user can do with it The permissions assigned to a document through IRM are stored as a part of the document and control printing, copying, and even forwarding Traditionally, once a file was downloaded, there was no limit to what a user could do with that file For example, you draft a confidential memo using Microsoft Word You send that memo as an e-mail attachment to a co-worker for review Before the application of IRM, when that Word document arrives in your co-worker s inbox, he or she could print it, make copies of it, modify the file, or forward it to another person However, IRM
