You can manually add content to a list in two ways: Single entry mode As its name suggests, this mode is used to add items to a list one at a time Typically, this mode is used to add a list s initial items, or for lists with only a few entries Datasheet mode This mode is much easier to use, especially for lists with more than just a few entries The datasheet mode uses a worksheet format that can be used to edit, sort, and arrange the contents of a list

A SharePoint list can contain URL links, location addresses, or paths to content items that allow users to quickly navigate to web sites, network resources, or content they wish to access To illustrate not only how a SharePoint list is created, but also how a list is used, the entries in the list being constructed in this example are the URLs for several of the more popular search engines How to use both the single entry and the datasheet modes to add items to a SharePoint list is discussed in the next two sections

The single entry mode for adding items to a SharePoint list is best used only when you need to add one or just a few items to a list To use the single entry mode to add items or entries to a list, do the following: 1 On the New List edit page (see Figure 12-5), click the New button to open its drop-down menu and then select New Item (as illustrated in Figure 12-6) to open the New Item entry page
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007: A Beginner s Guide
Figure 12-3 The Create page is used to add a list to a page
2 Because the list being created is a Links list, the New Item page is different that it would be for a Calendar or a Tasks list In this instance, the first entry on the page is for a URL Enter the URL and a brief description for the list entry being added For example, the URL (http://wwwgooglecom) and the name for Googlecom are entered, as illustrated in Figure 12-6 NOTE The asterisk after the URL indicates that the URL is a required entry However, the description is optional If entered, the description is displayed in the list Otherwise, the URL is displayed in the list
TIP It is generally safer to open the URL in a separate browser window or tab and then copy and paste the URL into the URL box on the New Item page Before saving the New Item, always use the Click Here To Test link to verify that the URL entered is valid
