14 Now just to show you one of the common controls (Navigation), you can see that this is simply an AspMenu object The data source in this case is a default one added by SharePoint to load the site navigation:

15 First, you ll want to change the image shown on the page Click on the icon (the Team icon on the top-left of the page)

16 Click the Code tab in the editor to switch back to Code Mode The code for the image will be highlighted:

17 Delete this and add this line in its place:

18 Save the page and switch back to Design Mode; the image change should appear:

19 Now you re going to change the background for the title portion of the page Click the site title, and then in the top bar, click the <Table> tab as shown: 20 Switch back to Code Mode (the table code will be selected); change the <td> class (just above the <Table> from ms-globalTitleArea to ms-WPAddButton 21 Save the page and then switch back to Design Mode The title should now be different (the background has changed, and the title is now centered):

So you re done! You ve changed the background and page image, but now you ll need to finish: 1 Right-click on the new page name in the Folder List window and then select CheckIn When prompted, select Publish a Major Version and click OK (comments are optional) SharePoint Designer will now pop up a prompt stating that, This document requires content approval Do you want to view or modify its approval status This indicates that the page must be approved before it can be used Click the Yes button, which will open up the Master and Layout Pages page (from Site Settings) 2 Locate your page in the list The status should be set to Pending 3 Mouse over the name to reveal the drop-down menu and click the Approve/ Reject link:

4 On the Approval page, click the Approved radio button and then click OK Now, to use the page, do the following: 1 In WSS, select Site Actions | Site Settings; in MOSS, select Site Actions | Site Settings | Manage All Site Settings 2 On the Site Settings page, under the Look and Feel group, click the Master Page link

3 On the Site Master Page Settings page, choose the new master in the drop-down menu list; leave the rest of the settings as they are so that this change will only affect the home page:

4 Click OK to save your changes, which will return you to the Site Settings page Then, click on the link in the Navigation bar to return to the home page The changes should be obvious:

5 If desired, return to the Site Settings page, click the Master Page link, and then reset the master to the default You can close SharePoint Designer as well, though it will be needed in the next section Also note that you cannot delete a Master Page if it is in use; to remove a master, you must remove all pages that use it first While I didn t cover this here, be aware that all standard controls, navigation, search, and so on, are simply drag and drop to the page Navigation, for example, is simply an
