Node majority Each node in the cluster can vote The cluster will only function if more than half of the nodes are available This is recommended for clusters with an odd number of nodes Node and disk majority Each node in the cluster plus the designated disk witness can vote The cluster will only function if more than half of the nodes are available This mode is recommended for clusters with an even number of nodes It is not recommended for multisite clusters Node and le share majority Each node in the cluster plus the designated le share witness can vote when they are in communication The cluster will only function when more than half of the nodes are available This mode is recommended for multisite clusters, for clusters with an even number of nodes, and for clusters with no shared storage

No majority disk only The cluster is available as long as one node is available and that node can communicate with a designated disk storage Other nodes can join the cluster only if they can communicate with the designated disk This mode is recommended for clusters with an even number of nodes where there is no shared storage The Create Cluster Wizard will typically pick the best quorum type for the cluster that you create You can see the Create Cluster Wizard in 3

Cluster services and applications essentially define the unit of failover In earlier versions of failover clustering, these were defined as resource groups At any point in time the service or application is owned by one cluster node If that cluster node fails, another cluster node will become the owner of the resource, which essentially means the service or application will be started on that node You can configure the preferred nodes that a service or application will failover to Resources can also have a LooksAlive check, which is a basic health check for the applications By default, SQL Server uses a LooksAlive test every five seconds

Clusters require shared storage and cannot be built using just direct access storage The cluster s shared storage can either be an iSCSI SAN (storage area network) or a Fibre Channel SAN For SQL Server a shared disk resource contains all of the system and user databases, logs, FILESTREAM files, and integrated full-text search files In the event of a failover, the disks are mounted on the backup node, and the SQL Server service is restarted on that node

New Failover Clustering Features in Windows Server 2008
Windows failover clustering was significantly revamped with the release of Windows Server 2008, and additional improvements have been made with Windows Server 2008 R2 The new improvements simplify cluster setup and management as well as enhance their flexibility and security

Cluster Validation
One of the biggest changes in failover clustering in Windows Server 2008 was the removal of the requirement that the hardware used in the cluster must be listed in the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) in order for the cluster to be supported To participate in the HCL, OEM vendors had to submit specific hardware configurations for testing While this ensured the systems worked with failover clustering, it also tended to limit the number of systems available for failover clustering and contributed toward making these systems expensive This process was eliminated with Windows Server 2008 and replaced by the new Cluster Validation Wizard A Windows Server 2008 failover cluster will be supported if it passes the cluster validation tests The cluster validation tests are a suite of system and configuration tests that determine the suitability for all of the nodes to successfully participate in the cluster The Cluster Validation Wizard performs the following tests: System con guration tests This set of tests determines if each of the servers meets the hardware and operating system requirements for the failover cluster Network tests This set of tests determines if the network con guration meets the failover cluster requirements For example, this will check whether the cluster nodes can communicate with each other Storage tests This set of tests determines if the storage meets the failover cluster requirements For example, the tests will determine if there are available drives for shared storage and if there is a suitable quorum disk available Running the Cluster Validation Wizard is shown in 3
