The iSCSI SAN connection needs to be on a completely separate network from your local client network For best performance, network adapters used for the iSCSI network should run at a minimum of 1GB For Live Migration, Microsoft also recommends the use of an additional network connection for node-to-node connectivity that is separate from both the client network and the SAN network This example in this chapter will use two network connections The exact configuration steps of the SAN itself are highly dependent on each different vendor s hardware The examples in this chapter were built using a LeftHand Networks SAS Starter SAN The LeftHand Network Starter SAN is an iSCSI SAN The example in this chapter uses two different SAN volumes: Quorum 100MB VMs 1TB

You need to configure the iSCSI Initiator on each of the Windows Server 2008 nodes To configure the iSCSI Initiator, use the Start | Administrative Tools | iSCSI Initiator option If you ve never run the iSCSI Initiator option before, you ll see two prompts The first prompt will alert you that the iSCSI service is not running The second will ask you about unblocking the Windows Firewall You will almost always want the iSCSI Initiator Service to automatically start when you start the computer You can always change this option by manually configuring the iSCSI service using the Administrative Tools | Services option The second prompt will ask you if you want to unblock the Microsoft iSCSI service so that it can communicate across the Windows Firewall Again, you ll usually want to answer Yes You can also manually configure this setting by taking the Control Panel | Windows Firewall option and unblocking port 3260 After you respond to these two prompts, the iSCSI Initiator will be displayed as you can see in Figure 10-1

Before connecting to the SAN, you may need to configure the SAN with the ISCSI Initiator name The iSCSI Initiator Name can be found on the iSCSI Initiator s Configuration tab The example presented here uses the name iqn1991-05commicrosoft:ws08r2-s1contosocom The name used in your configuration will be different, depending on the system and domain names that are in use To configure the iSCSI Initiator to connect to your iSCSI SAN, click the Discovery tab and then click Discover Portal This will display the Add Target Portal dialog box that you can see in Figure 10-2 Using the Discover Target Portal dialog box, enter the IP address used by the SAN In this example, the SAN address is 19216801 and it is using the default port of 3260 After entering the IP address, click OK; the iSCSI Initiator will discover the storage resources on the SAN and list them on the iSCSI Initiator s Target tab Next, select each of the discovered targets and click Connect This will display the Connect To Target dialog box, which will resemble the one in Figure 10-3
