Installing Master Data Services
Installing MDS is a relatively simple process and is only responsible for dropping the bits onto the machine Any machine that will implement the Master Data Manager web application or the web services needs to run the installation package In SQL Server 2008 R2, the MDS feature is not a part of the standard SQL Server setup The stand-alone msi file to install MDS is located in the Master Data Services folder at the root of the installation media
Procedure: Install Master Data Services
To install Master Data Services, complete the following steps:
1 2
On the SQL Server installation media, open MasterDataServices\x64\<language> (for example, MaterDataServices\x64\1033_ENU_LP\) Double-click MasterDataServicesmsi The Welcome page is displayed
2: Installation and Configuration 3 4 5 6
Click Next Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next Enter your name and/or company and click Next Optional On the Feature Selection page, click Browse to change the location where the files will be installed Unless there is some technical reason to change this location, you should leave the standard location alone
Click to change the installation location

Click Next On the Ready to Install Program page, click Install You may be prompted to allow the installation to proceed If you are, click Yes

When the installation completes, click Finish You may be prompted to allow the installation to proceed If you are, click Yes
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Master Data Services
After successful installation, Master Data Services Configuration Manager is displayed on your screen, and you can now use it to create your database and web site and to enable web services
About MDS Configuration Manager
Once the bits are installed, MDS Configuration Manager will assist you in the process of configuring MDS for first use MDS Configuration Manager, shown in Figure 2-3, can be broken into two sections: Databases and Web Configuration If valid versions of Windows PowerShell or Internet Information Services cannot be found, the initial screen will provide that status If applicable, you will need to resolve these issues before continuing with configuration of MDS

2: Installation and Configuration
Creating an MDS Database
The initial step in configuring Master Data Services is to create a new MDS database The database can only be created on a SQL Server 2008 R2 database server Whether this is a local instance or an instance that exists on another database server, MDS Configuration Manager will perform a check to ensure that the database server is Enterprise, Developer, or DataCenter Once this check is successful, an empty MDS database will be created on the database server This empty database will contain all of the tables, views, and stored procedures that make up the architecture of MDS You must first determine whether to install the MDS database locally or on another machine There are two major factors that should influence this decision:
Do you already have access to a database farm or server running SQL Server 2008 R2 Although not always available, this would provide the most economical way to split the two roles of MDS onto separate machines Please be aware that MDS licensing requires that all machines that have any component of MDS installed must be licensed for Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Does your organization have any restrictions about having the database server and web server roles on the same machine Although this is an antiquated philosophy born in older, less secure versions of both products, some companies still insist that the database server and web server not be on the same box
A lesser concern for most companies should be the application s performance Although it is true that MDS will use processor capacity for both stored procedures on the database server and handling requests on the web server, in most implementations these burdens should be handled by standard hardware that is available on the market today Microsoft does not provide minimum hardware requirements for MDS, but due to the cost of the license, we suggest a minimum of 8GB of RAM on a quad-core machine With this configuration, an implementation that must support 20 concurrent users would be fine
