The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit, or MAP, is a free solution accelerator that is available from Microsoft to help with planning and assessing Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hardware, Office 2007, security, SQL Server, power savings, application virtualization, performance monitoring, server consolidation, and virtualization This toolkit helps to automate the collection of data we ve mentioned and helps with determining host configuration and virtual machine placement For the purpose of this book, we re only going to focus on the virtualization planning components from the MAP Toolkit Using the MAP Toolkit you ll be able to perform the following tasks to help build your candidate profile: Inventory the servers and workstations you are considering for virtualization Collect performance data on the considered systems Help determine the placement and number of your guest virtual machines on a virtual server Produce reports with detailed information on which systems can be virtualized
How Does the MAP Tool Assess Systems
The Microsoft Assessment and Planning tool uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), the Remote Registry Service, performance counters, Active Directory domain services, and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) to collect inventory and performance metrics
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
The Assessment and Planning Toolkit uses WMI to collect hardware, device, and software information from remote computers All assessment scenarios use WMI to conduct inventory tasks In order to have a successful inventory and collection, some WMI configuration steps need to be in place prior to running an inventory Table 2-5 describes the settings to modify in WMI
Windows Active Directory Domain Services
If you have Windows Active Directory installed and your systems are joined to your domain, you can configure the MAP Toolkit to query a domain controller for a computer list versus having to create a text file for the MAP tool to read in
Remote Registry Service
The MAP Toolkit uses the Remote Registry Service to find installed roles and run the Performance Metrics Wizard In order for the MAP tool to be successful, make sure the following items have been performed on the systems you plan to inventory

When installing MAP, the following software prerequisites need to be met prior to the installation A supported operating system: Windows XP 32-bit or 64-bit with SP2 or SP3 Windows Vista Ultimate, Enterprise, or Business 32-bit or 64-bit with or without SP1

MAP also has a set of hardware requirements, as shown in Table 2-6, depending on the number of systems that will be scanned and assessed As with any system that will have a significant amount of data flowing through it, a gigabit network card is a good idea One additional point you will want to take into consideration is whether you re going to be scanning and collecting data from 10,000 or more systems If so, you will want to install SQL Server 2005 or 2008 to handle the amount of data Also, if your company has 50,000 or more systems that you are going to be conducting an assessment on, you may want to break up your inventory into manageable divisions and possibly inventory systems per site or per network segment OK, now that you ve configured your systems with the prerequisites, let s get MAP installed and start it collecting your system s information
