ow that you ve got Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V installed on your server, you need to go through a few steps to configure it Depending on your requirements and what you ve planned out, you re going to have to set up networking, storage, and possible clustering In this chapter we ll talk about your options for configuring your network for the ideal Hyper-V deployment, and the measures that Microsoft has built in to ensure that your server achieves optimum uptime

The Hyper-V Manager console is built on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 30 platform The Hyper-V Manager is divided into three distinct panes The pane furthest to the left is the console Explorer pane In the console Explorer pane you can load one or many MMC snap-ins In this pane you can choose which Hyper-V host machine you want to manage, and you can right-click on a Hyper-V server and run actions

The middle pane of the MMC with the Hyper-V Manager snap-in is the Information pane The Information pane will provide information about the snap-in that you have selected in the Explorer pane on the left If you choose the Hyper-V Manager level in the Explorer pane, you will be provided with an introduction and some resources When you select a host server, the Information pane will show which virtual machines are on that host If you select a virtual machine, it will show you what snapshots have been created as well as an image of the virtual machine and some information about it To the right is the Actions pane The Actions pane is new in MMC 30 and, in our opinion, a great addition Depending on what you have selected in the Explorer pane, the Actions pane will show what actions are available for that selection For instance, if you have selected the Hyper-V Manager level, the major action will be to connect to a Hyper-V server If you select the server level and a virtual machine action, both the server and the virtual machine will be displayed The same actions are accessible by right-clicking the object in the Information pane or the Explorer pane

Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V gives your organization multiple different options for networking your virtual machines There are several different methods that you can use for your virtual machines You can have many virtual machines sharing one NIC; you can have dedicated a physical NIC to one virtual machine; or you can have a combination of the two Determining what you need from a network standpoint will be driven by your customers requirements or your virtualization candidate requirements, which you documented in your candidate profile
Networking Options
By default Hyper-V comes with three different networking settings: External, Internal, and Private The external network setting creates a connection to a physical NIC so that guest virtual machines can access the physical network to which that NIC is connected The Internal setting creates a network that the host and the guest virtual machines can communicate on The Private network setting creates a network that only virtual machines can communicate on More than likely, if you are mixing production, development, and test workloads on your virtual environments, you will have a mix of external, internal, and private networks
VLAN Tagging and Hyper-V
In Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V networking, there is an additional option to enable VLAN tagging A VLAN is a virtual local area network that can be split across multiple switches, routers, and locations, allowing for network devices to be grouped together even though they may be in different parts of the world VLAN tagging or frame tagging was developed by Cisco Systems to help identify packets travelling across trunked network links A trunked network is a network link that has multiple VLANs associated with it
