To create a highly available virtual machine with the Hyper-V Manager, there are a series of prerequisites and steps that you need to do prior to the creation of the virtual machine The prerequisites are: You have a healthy Hyper-V host cluster For Windows Server 2008 R1, each highly available guest will require that a dedicated LUN is created on your shared storage environment and configured as a cluster disk prior to creating the VM If you have multiple virtual disks that you are going to attach to the virtual machine, either you can have those disks on the same LUN, or we recommend that you put each disk on its own dedicated LUN For Windows Server 2008 R2, CSV should be enabled and CSV storage added to the cluster prior to creating the VM The virtual machines will be kept in the SystemDrive \ClusteredStorage directory Format the disk or disks as NTFS

Once you ve created the disk space and configured the disk to be available on each node of your cluster, you can start the creation of your virtual machine Follow the process above to create a virtual machine with the Hyper-V Manager on the cluster node on which the cluster disk is active When you reach the Specify Name and Location page, you will need to change your location to the new cluster disk that is available for that virtual machine, or the CSV location and volume you would like to store that VHD

Creating a New Virtual Machine with SCVMM 2008
Open the SCVMM 2008 console with a user account that has the rights to create a virtual machine Click the Hosts, Virtual Machines, Library, or Jobs navigation tab In the Actions pane under the Virtual Machine Manager heading, click New Virtual Machine This will start the SCVMM 2008 New Virtual Machine Wizard You can also click the Actions drop-down on the toolbar to start the Virtual Machine Wizard No matter where you are in SCVMM 2008, the Actions drop-down will always be available for you to use to create a new virtual machine and other tasks This will bring up the New Hardware Profile Wizard Since we re creating a new virtual machine, choose the Create the New Virtual Machine with a Blank Virtual Hard Disk radio button and click Next Enter a name for your virtual machine You can also define who the owner of the virtual machine is The owner of the virtual machine must have an Active Directory account You can optionally add a description of the virtual machine Click Next to configure the virtual machine hardware From here you can choose a hardware profile that you ve preconfigured, use the SCVMM 2008 defaults, or configure each component You can also use this screen to create and save a new hardware profile We want to go over a couple of differences between creating a hardware profile and editing hardware while creating your virtual machine By default when you create a virtual machine from a blank virtual hard disk, the hard disk is created as a 40GB dynamic disk and is associated as an IDE disk To change the virtual hard drive configuration, click on the virtual disk in the Bus Configuration pane
From here you can choose which channel you want the virtual hard drive associated to, and you can choose to change the disk from the IDE adapter to a SCSI adapter
