Another Windows feature one that not too many people use that has been expanded upon in Windows Vista is the ALT+TAB key combination In earlier versions of Windows, the ALT+TAB key combination would let you move through your open applications In Windows Vista, however, the ALT+TAB combination displays a flip view containing the live thumbnails of all the open windows Holding down the ALT key keeps Windows Flip active, while pressing Tab while holding down Alt allows you to cycle through your open windows A similar feature is Windows Flip 3D Basically, this provides the exact same feature as Windows Flip; however, the thumbnails are displayed in a 3D view This is accomplished by holding down the Windows logo key Pressing the Tab key while holding down the Windows logo key allows you to cycle through the windows When you release the Windows logo key, the currently viewed window is selected This is shown in Figure 1-8

Turning Off and Shutting Down
One of the key performance features of Windows Vista is how it turns off and shuts down In earlier versions of Windows, both actions accomplished the same thing: Windows ceased what it was doing, saved what needed to be saved, parked the hard drive heads, and turned itself off Turning off and shutting down a computer running Windows Vista, however, are not synonymous actions Let s take a closer look at what Vista does when you are done working Turning Off When you turn off a computer running Windows Vista, the computer enters a sleep state Entering a sleep state causes Windows Vista to do the following: Saves all work Turns off the display Enters the computer into sleep mode
When in sleep mode, the computer doesn t power off entirely; rather, it stops the PC s fan, the hard drive stops spinning, and the computer enters a low-power mode This is useful, because when you start the computer again, it fires right up and is ready for action To enter sleep mode, click the Start button, and then click the GUI s Power button To wake the computer up, press the computer s Power button or a button on the keyboard Keep in mind that not every computer is capable of entering sleep mode It depends on your hardware configuration, whether updates requiring a reboot have been installed, or whether sleep mode has been administratively disabled NOTE Because the computer is still drawing power in sleep mode, don t try to add or remove any internal hardware during this time Make sure the computer is completely shut down and unplugged from the power source; otherwise, the last thing you ll see is a bright blue flash Shutting Down As opposed to turning off a computer, shutting down the computer completely shuts it off To shut down a computer running Windows Vista: 1 Click Start, and then click the Options button to the right of the Power and Lock buttons 2 Click Shut Down
