While giving control of your computer to a friend or expert is meant to solve your technical difficulties, there is still the chance for security problems You should bear these issues in mind before allowing a Remote Assistance connection In most cases, there will be a different level of permissions and access between administrators and standard users That is, what the expert is able to do with his or her permissions is probably a lot more than what a user is able to do with his or her permissions This can be an issue in problem-solving, because the expert assisting the user accesses at the user s security level As such, any actions the helper makes will be limited to what the user is allowed to do If the user is seeking help from someone across an Internet connection, it s a good idea to use a VPN connection This is a safe practice, because it effectively scrambles the communication between the two computers on the off chance that someone with access anywhere along the network is monitoring the connection for interesting information

3 Next, as Figure 8-12 shows, choose whether you want to send your invitation via e-mail or save the invitation as a file Selecting the e-mail option calls up your system s e-mail system However, if you use a Web-based e-mail system, save the invitation as a file, and attach it to your Web-based e-mail For this example, we re using Send Your Invitation Via E-mail 4 Next, you ll enter a password that must be at least six characters in length Your helper will enter this password to access your computer 5 Then Windows Vista will generate an e-mail message, like the one in Figure 8-13 You enter your helper s e-mail address and make any changes you want to the e-mail message You ll notice that there is also an attachment with your e-mail This is the file your helper will open to initiate the help session 6 Click the Send button 7 Call your helper and tell him or her that an invitation is on the way This is a good time to share the password with your helper 8 When your helper gets the invitation and enters the password to access the invitation ticket, you ll see a dialog box asking Would you like to allow (the user) to connect to you computer Click Yes to proceed
